The Department of Biology is a large, unified department with strong undergraduate degrees, nationally-ranked graduate programs, world-class research spanning the breadth of biological questions and experimental systems, and a passion for science outreach.

Our premiere outreach programs -- The Jim Holland Summer Enrichment Program (SEP), Summer Research Science Program (SSRP), and Research Initiative in STEM Education (RISE) -- are exciting opportunities for underrepresented high school students to be introduced to various scientific subjects from microbiology to plant biology through a series of lectures, hands-on laboratory experiences, scientific research, and/or STEM career and college training. Program activities are led by a dynamic and skilled team of Indiana University faculty members and Indiana high school teachers.

Job Summary

Teachers serve an important function for the SEP as they help assist student participants with understanding concepts and protocols as well as serving as a mentor and a positive role model. Teachers must be accessible during lecture and lab activities since the primary goal is to interact with your subset of students and ensure they comprehend activities and key takeaways.

Dates of the Jim Holland Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) are July 18-23, 2021 and will be held VIRTUALLY.

Other responsibilities consist of, but are not exclusive to, the following tasks:

  • Attend all program activities.
  • Coordinate additional educational activities and be available to perform other duties as assigned.
  • Review and evaluate lab journals, providing constructive feedback to help participants reflect on their learning and develop effective scientific communication skills.
  • Evaluate program success by assisting with student evaluations and completing a program evaluation.
  • Interact with the students and serve as a positive role model.
  • Adhere to program policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in education, natural sciences, or a related field and one year of experience teaching, supervising, and/or working with K-12 youth in a formal or informal educational setting. Graduate students with similar teaching experience will also be considered.

A high level of responsibility, punctuality, and accountability. Ability to complete tasks in a productive and proactive manner. Available to work for the entire program.

Preferred Qualifications

Background or experience with school environments or educating students in a science field, and/or experience working with science outreach programs and underrepresented students is highly desirable.

Working Conditions / Demands

Since this year's programs are virtual, the person in this role is required to have reliable technology, including stable internet connection, access to email, and Zoom Video Conferencing.

Teachers must not have any other commitments during the scheduled dates of the program unless approved by the program director in advance. If chosen, teachers must also attend a staff orientation one day prior to the start of the program (July 17, 2021).
