Job Description Summary
This position will be the equivalent of a corporate Enterprise Architect or Principal Engineer, and will be the primary strategic technical leader for WRDS, driving technology strategy and execution, particularly as it relates to maintaining and increasing revenue. In contrast to more implementation-focused engineers, the primary role of the Principal Engineer is leadership, guiding others to implement new technologies, eliminate obstacles, and empower teams to complete projects on time and within budgets. The Principal Engineer proactively spends time outside of critical path projects, and during that time is searching out and qualifying impactful opportunities. The position will report directly to the Managing Director of WRDS and will be responsible for leading WRDS' next phase of engineering sophistication, product innovation, and team mentoring.

Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS) supports over 75,000 users worldwide, doing research on over one petabyte of financial data. We manage and redistribute hundreds of data products from over 50 different companies. WRDS is part of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Who We Are Looking For

WRDS is hiring a Principal Engineer, who will envision and architect WRDS' technology strategy and execution. This position will be the equivalent of a corporate Enterprise Architect, and will be the primary strategic technical visionary for WRDS, particularly relating to maintaining and increasing revenue. The primary job of the Principal Engineer will be a leadership role to guide others in the process of implementing new technologies, eliminate obstacles, and empower teams to complete projects on time and within budgets. The principal engineer proactively spends time outside of critical path projects, and during that time is looking for and identifying impactful opportunities. The position will be responsible for realizing WRDS' next phase of engineering sophistication, product innovation, and team mentoring.

Qualifications:

  • Typically has 15+ years of experience. May have previously been a Senior Engineer, Principal Engineer, or CTO at a start-up. Is a deep technical expert in their area and has a drive and vision for where an organization should be going in the future.
  • Excellent business judgment, team management and communication and interpersonal skills that result in the ability to work effectively and efficiently within the leadership team and with a sophisticated customer base and business partners. Ability to think strategically, with proven leadership ability.
  • An expert in their area. Designs, builds, and suggests architecture that will grow the company in the future. Has a track record of leading the design and implementation of high risk or mission critical projects, particularly those that require the application or invention of new technology or techniques.
  • Hands-on technology product management experience, particularly in a dynamic SaaS organization. Experience taking product through multiple lifecycles. Champions new technologies and the modernization of legacy systems. Proven ability to ameliorate technical debt.
  • Strong familiarity with the difficulties of innovation-based software development (timing and deliverables). Experience selling technology to Universities and/or students a plus. Can contribute to discussions and even help resolve conflicts at a senior leadership level. Manages the balance of business needs and engineering needs expertly.
  • Advanced university degree in the field of computer science, business administration, or another rigorous discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent organizational skills, in particular the ability to prioritize and build effective working relationships. The go-to mentor for our engineers. Is an expert and patient teacher.
  • First class communications skills, both written and verbal, and ability to build relationships and collaborate with a variety of personalities and styles, including experience dealing with senior management and clients.
  • Ability to articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Highly valued - a strong sense of commitment, flexibility and teamwork, positive outlook, and a sense of humor.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
