The Welder is responsible for fabricating metal to repair waste containers/equipment and trucks. The position is crucial to the provision of waste container services and the safe and productive repair of containers, equipment and trucks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operates specified welding equipment to fabricate and performs repairs on new and used solid waste handling equipment.
  • Repairs and preps equipment for painting including painting assigned equipment.
  • Fabricates steel parts for containers, trucks, and equipment such as compactors auxiliary waste equipment or components like chutes or railings.
  • Operates forklift or crane on the yard, drives service vehicle to customer or other locations to make metal repairs to containers, trucks or other waste equipment.
  • Maintains accurate records of services performed and inventory of supplies.
  • Reads and interprets equipment condition reports and/or repair orders, communicates with supervisor and/or operator for clarification of problems; may discuss preventive techniques with operators to minimize future repairs.
  • Makes minor repairs of other types to trucks and equipment under the direction of the maintenance manager or supervisor.
  • Follows Company safety policies and procedures to perform job duties, and operate tools, equipment and machinery.
  • Ensures shop, equipment, and tools are in safe operating condition.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) desired, but not required.
  • Certification of basic welding skills and/or two (2) year's experience in welding/fabricating.
  • Valid state issued driver's license.
  • Must be able to meet relevant criteria for safety sensitive functions according to Company standards.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of all tools required to perform repairs and maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to follow schedules, instructions, technical manuals and maintenance guidelines, and other procedures associated with the maintenance of the company fleet.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, other related state and federal regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers.

Physical/Mental Demands:
  • Ability to stand, sit, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, taste, and smell.
  • Visual Requirements: include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to work in usually loud conditions.

Working Conditions:
  • Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, hot and cold weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes and airborne particles
  • Occasionally work in high precarious places.
  • Work environment is usually loud.
  • Work in close, tight spaces to include confines spaces.
