Position Summary
Recruit tenure-track faculty position(s) in water resources at the rank of Assistant Professor. The following areas of research expertise are to be emphasized in the search:

* Large-scale water modeling using high-performance and cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and remote sensing for streamflow, flood, drought, water quality, and other hydrologic forecasting applications.

* Information systems and technology for water management, engineering, and operations that leads to innovations in geospatial data management and analytics, visualization, web portals, software, and applications of geospatial technologies.

Appointments to the faculty of The University of Alabama are based on the personnel requirements of the University's academic programs and on the goal of achieving and maintaining excellence in its teaching, research, and service/academic citizenship activities.

Detailed Position Information
The College of Engineering at the University of Alabama invites applications for a number of tenure track faculty positions at all ranks with a focus on water resources. We particularly seek candidates in all engineering areas that complement and enhance our major water initiatives sponsored by NOAA and USGS that are advancing the next generation of hydrologic modeling and water observation systems with emerging opportunities in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and decision science. Candidates working in other areas related to water resources and quality research are also of interest. The anticipated start date is August 2023.

The following research areas are particular priorities for some of the positions available through this current search.

Large-scale Water Modeling - Driven by the challenge of intensifying hydroclimate extremes, there is a need to improve the delivery of actionable water intelligence and the response of decision-makers for national-level forecasting of streamflow, floods, droughts, and water quality. This position requires application of large-scale hydrologic modeling with specialization in high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, remote sensing, and cloud computing. The ideal candidate will complement process and computational hydrologists at UA by bringing expertise to advance national-scale water prediction in hybrid computational environments. We seek applicants familiar with the planning and designing of resilient infrastructure and communities, decision making under uncertainty, and applying emerging techniques from mathematics, computer science, and data science to advance hydrologic, hydraulic, hydrodynamic, water quality, and ecosystem modeling applications.

Hydroinformatics - Motivated by the expansion of data acquisition systems and the need for managing and using massive datasets, this position requires specialization in information systems and technology for water management, engineering, and operations, with expertise in extreme data management, analytics, data mining, large dataset access, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, water systems modeling, and geographic information systems. The ideal candidate will align with needs for research in design and development of water databases, derived data products, middleware, web portals, and software contributing to open-source development, FAIR data principles, and the needs of a diverse water sector. We seek applicants with experience working with geospatial and time series data and creating advanced platforms for managing, processing, sharing, and analyzing water quantity and quality observations.

Outstanding candidates in other water research areas will also receive full consideration.

Joint appointments across different departments within the College, as well as joint appointments with other departments in other colleges across the University are possible as appropriate. An earned Ph.D. degree in a relevant engineering, computer science, or closely related field before the starting date is required. Strong communication skills, interdisciplinary team science experience, and the ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies are also necessary.

All departments in the College of Engineering offer ABET/EAC accredited Bachelor of Science degrees in multiple relevant sub-disciplines. At the graduate level, the departments offer Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The departments also support dual-degree graduate programs, such as the joint MSCE/MBA and joint MSCE/JD.

Minimum Qualifications
Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in civil engineering or a relevant engineering, computer science, or closely related field from an accredited institution.

Applicants must demonstrate the ability to effectively collaborate with other faculty, especially across disciplines; exhibit the potential for excellence in teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels; and be committed to departmental, college, university, and professional service. Applicants must also meet all university criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor.

Preferred Qualifications
* Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

* Experience working in a multicultural and diverse environment.

* Post-doctoral experience or other similar post-graduate experience.

Instructions and Required Materials for Application
Application packages should consist of a cover letter, CV, a detailed statement of research interests and plans, a statement of teaching interests, and contact information for at least four references. The cover letter should state which research priority area the applicant feels their research interests fit within.

Questions about the application process may be submitted at https://cce.eng.ua.edu/about/contact-us/. Applications will be accepted and reviewed continuously until the positions are filled with an expected start date of August 16, 2023.
