The University of Illinois College of Law seeks applicants to serve as the Visiting Associate Director of the Kimball R. and Karen Gatsis Anderson Center for Advocacy and Professionalism ("Anderson Center"). The Anderson Center's mission is to provide a world-class experience in both advocacy and professional ethics that prepares and develops competent and professional advocates with essential skills to serve their community and zealously represent their clients in all manners of legal practice. To fulfill this mission, the Anderson Center focuses its efforts on its three pillars of success. First, the Anderson Center works with University of Illinois College of Law leadership to provide, support, and teach innovative and rigorous trial advocacy courses that emphasize the integration of trial practice, rules of evidence, and professional ethics, while incorporating a "learning while doing" approach. Second, the Anderson Center supports competitive mock trial, moot court, and alternative dispute resolution teams that compete in national competitions throughout the fall and spring semesters. Third, the Anderson Center develops special programming, such as symposiums, advocacy competitions, and CLEs that explore and advance the intersection of advocacy and professionalism.

The Visiting Associate Director of the Anderson Center will assist the Director of the Anderson Center in all components of the Anderson Center mission. Based on qualifications, the Visiting Associate Director may also teach trial advocacy related courses and/or coach competitive advocacy teams. Additionally, the Visiting Associate Director will receive substantial assistance and cooperation from the Anderson Center Director and Trial Advocacy faculty in preparing for the academic job market should they intend to seek a Director of Advocacy position of their own.

Job Summary
The Visiting Associate Director of the Anderson Center will assist the Director of the Anderson Center in all components of the Anderson Center mission. Based on qualifications, the Visiting Associate Director may also teach trial advocacy related courses and/or coach competitive advocacy teams. Additionally, the Visiting Associate Director will receive substantial assistance and cooperation from the Anderson Center Director and Trial Advocacy faculty in preparing for the academic job market should they intend to seek a Director of Advocacy position of their own.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Teaching
  • Teaching law school advocacy teams (mock trial, moot court, or alternative dispute resolution) in both the fall and spring semester
  • Teaching advocacy related trainings through the fall and spring semester to College of Law students
  • Teaching CLEs relating to advocacy to members of the Illinois bar and alumni
  • Mentoring College of Law students on advocacy related opportunities and the profession of law
• Program Management
  • Collaborating with the Anderson Center Director in the development of new and innovative courses for the Trial Advocacy Program
  • Collaborating with the Anderson Center Director in development of online and live programs for the trial advocacy community
  • Collaborating with the Anderson Center Director in development of advocacy (mock trial, moot court, alternative dispute resolution) competitions that will be hosted and sponsored by the Anderson Center and College of Law
  • Collaborating with the Anderson Center Director in development of symposia, practice case files and problems, and advocacy related scholarship and publications
• Administration
  • Assisting the Anderson Center Director with the administration and development of the Mock Trial Program
  • Assisting the Anderson Center Director with the administration and development of the Moot Court Program
  • Assisting the Anderson Center Director with the administration and development of the Competitive Alternative Dispute Resolution Program

Minimum Qualifications

Prior participation in law school advocacy competitions (moot court, trial team, alternative dispute resolution) or trial/appellate experience in practice; stellar academic credentials

Preferred Qualifications

State bar license, 2 years of practice experience
Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time visiting academic position, appointed on a 12-month basis that is typically renewed for a second year assuming satisfactory performance. The expected start date is August 16, 2024. The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $70,000 per year. This position requires up to 20% travel, primarily to events in the Chicago area and to competitions throughout the U.S.
