The Clarkson University Honors Program is looking to fill a Visiting Assistant Professor of Honors with a background in Humanities/Social Sciences to begin on or around August 1, 2022. This is a one-year, full-time position.

The Clarkson University Honors Program is comprised of approximately 200 academically gifted students. The successful candidate for this Visiting Assistant Professor position embraces the Clarkson Honors philosophy, which emphasizes transdisciplinary pedagogy, systems thinking, real-world engagement, and co-curricular and scholarly activity. They must embrace the value of knowledge and learning practices from multiple disciplines, emphasize collaboration and process over product, and encourage growth mindsets in the Honors cohort. They must also be dedicated to fostering a sense of community and willing to engage in the life of the program (community events, recruitment and admissions, etc.).

The Visiting Assistant Professor of Honors must have a background in Humanities or Social Sciences. The courses assigned include "Introduction to Community Engagement," a service-learning course, as well as "A Matter of Perspective," a humanities-based course. The Visiting Assistant Professor will develop and oversee Honors community engagement opportunities including serving as Honors Program Advisor for the Clarkson Food Pantry, advise the sophomore cohort of Honors students, and support ongoing curricular and co-curricular programming in Honors.

TEACHING/WORKLOAD:

  • Teach two sections of HP200 "Introduction to Community Engagement" in Fall 2022

  • Serve as primary liaison and manage communication with community and campus partners throughout fall semester, collaborate with Director on establishing and maintaining these partnerships

  • Teach two sections of HP201, "A Matter of Perspective: Reframing, Retelling, and Revision" in Spring 2023

  • work in partnership with Director of Honors to develop new syllabi and teaching materials for both courses

ADVISING:

  • Serves as the Honors advisor for the sophomore cohort of Honors students (between 50-65 students). The Honors advisor must meet with each student once per semester, and more often for particular students as needed.

  • Works in close concert with the Director and the Honors faculty and staff to identify and offer holistic support to any students who are struggling or facing personal or academic challenges to success.

  • Assists students pursuing competitive internships and scholarships through the development of application materials as needed, in coordination with other Honors faculty and staff.

  • Continue to develop their skills as a holistic advisor through workshops and professional development opportunities (eg. Mental Health First Aid, Safe Space, etc.).

  • Serve as Honors Program Advisor of the Clarkson Food Pantry and collaborate with campus partners on its maintenance and improvement (including Dean of Students, Institute for Sustainable Environment, etc).

  • Serve as Honors Program Advisor of the Service Committee of the Honors Steering Board.

SERVICE:

  • Develop experiential and service learning programming in collaboration with the Institute for STEM Education, including but not limited to IMPETUS program

  • Develop new community partnerships with local community partners for HP 200 and co-curricular service

  • Develop experiential and service learning programming in collaboration with the Institute for Sustainable Environment, including but not limited to exploring possible Honors integration into Adirondack semester

  • Represents, along with the Director and Program Staff and Faculty, the Honors Program in admission webinars, Clarkson visit days, and other student events.

  • Contributes to the development, writing, and submission of grant proposals as needed.

  • Attends professional development conferences to stay informed on national and international trends in honors programs/colleges. Where appropriate, organize student participation in these conferences.

  • Establishes and assesses measurable student learning outcomes, program goals, and objectives in assigned areas of responsibility; maintains reports, surveys and other records of accomplishments, appropriate student learning outcomes, and departmental needs.

  • Serves as an active member of the Honors Curriculum and Assessment Committee.

  • Other Duties as Assigned.

POSITION DESCRIPTION DETAILS:

The two courses that the Visiting Assistant Professor will teach include:

HP200: Introduction to Community Engagement: This course will employ methodologies from multiple fields and from diverse perspectives to help students develop an understanding of the social impacts of engagement through community-based service partnerships. This is a service-learning course.

HP201: A Matter of Perspective: Reframing, Retelling, and Revision: We'll first explore how narratives represent points of view. We will situate the narratives we've received within their particular social and historical contexts. Then, we'll examine the ways in which writers, directors, historians, or political scientists reconfigure, revise, and reimagine narratives in order to shift dominant ways of knowing.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimal qualifications/experience:

  • The Visiting Assistant Professor must have a PhD in Humanities or Social Sciences field and exhibit familiarity with equity-based service and/or experiential learning

Preferred qualifications/experience:

  • experience with service learning, community engagement, and/or coordination of community service

  • previous advising experience
