This Virtual Monitor Medical Observer Technician is Full Time Days.

Schedule: 7:00am - 7:00pm, 3 12 hour shifts per week. Days of the week vary with every other weekend rotation.

Location: NGMC Virtual Monitoring Unit

Department Overview:

The Virtual Monitoring Unit (VMU) provides continuous monitoring of a patient's safety by using monitoring equipment and software.

Located on the Gainesville campus, VMU has 3 central monitoring stations. The VMU monitors Gainesville, Barrow and Braselton acute care patients based upon criteria including fall risk assessments as well as patients assessed by the RN as needing frequent/continual observation.

VMU is responsible for providing safety alerts to the nursing unit when there is a threat to a patient's safety such as an immediate threat of a fall. In addition to a message being sent to the staff members on the nursing unit, a dedicated emergency phone line is maintained on each nursing unit with virtual monitoring capabilities.

VMU does not record patient images. The VMU logs the occurrence of safety events and observations on selected patients.

Job Summary:

The Virtual Monitor Tech/ Medical Observer is responsible for observation of the patient to promote and protect the patient's safety. The Virtual Monitor Tech identifies safety concerns, documents safety-related observations and communicates information regarding the patient's safety to the nursing staff. The Virtual Monitor Tech/ Medical Observer intervenes when there is a potential or actual threat to patient's safety. Observation is provided for adolescent, adult, and geriatric age groups.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • On the job training will be scheduled by Department
  • Must have Basic Life Support Certification through the American Heart Association
  • Preferred: One year of relevant clinical experience in a health care setting

Essential Tasks and Responsbilities:
  • Receives handoff communication from Medical Observer/Virtual Monitor Tech at start of shift and provides handoff communication to oncoming Medical Observer/Virtual Monitor Tech for the upcoming shift.
  • Identifies the specific safety risk(s) for which the patient is being monitored.
  • Confirms need to initiate or discontinue virtual monitoring or bedside monitoring with shift primary nurse.
  • Maintains continual direct visualization of the patient either at the bedside or visualization through the virtual monitoring system.
  • Recognizes changes in the patient's behavior or demeanor that indicate increasing risk for an adverse safety event and escalates concerns.
  • Discerns those safety risks that pose, or may pose, an immediate threat to life.
  • Does not interrupt patient visualization until relieved by a qualified replacement.
  • Surveys the patient environment for items that could pose a potential safety risk to the patient.
  • Identifies family/visitors who may pose a threat to the patient's safety or who bring in items that may pose a safety threat.
  • Remains alert and patient focused. Does not make personal calls, text or use email except during break time.
  • Refrains from sharing personal details or giving advice to patient/family.
  • Intervenes immediately for any actual or potential safety threat (does not provide direct patient care).
  • Documents observations and interventions by computer, handwritten or verbal communication.
  • Maintains order and functioning of Virtual Monitoring Unit and equipment. Reports equipment issues promptly.
  • Rotation of functions of a shift leader will be required from time to time to lead and organize workflow during the shift.
  • Effectively hand off to next shift. Shift lead will make sure others on shift have done the same prior to leaving.
  • When acting as shift lead, ability to escalate issues or concerns as soon as needed.
  • Other duties may be required as business needs determine.
