JOB SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the VETS Center's Veterans Certification Specialist and Outreach Representative is to provide administrative and processing support for all VA/DOD education benefits certifications in support of the VETS Center's veteran/military affiliated students. The secondary purpose of this position is to serve as the VETS Center's outreach representative at campus and community events and functions for building awareness, understanding, and interest in SNU and the VETS Center's role and programs that support veterans and military affiliated students. There are times where the Veterans Certification Specialist and Outreach Representative's work schedule may cover mission requirements and/or events outside normal business hours Monday through Friday and at times over the weekend (Saturday and Sunday).

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  • Provide administrative support for the VETS Center's VA Coordinator and SCO to maintain project, service, and certification records in both paper and electronic formats as appropriate; helps in preparing of reports on veteran/military affiliated student enrollment, retention, and graduation.
  • Perform VA education benefit certification processes for CH30, 31, 33/YR, 35, and 1606 education benefits.
  • Perform administrative support to DOD Tuition Assistance processing by tracking all DOD TA users, and inputting grades and attendance into the respective DOD TA portals (AI and AIM online systems)
  • Help maintain VETS Center's veteran certification date tracker and help maintain the student records filing system within the VETS Center.
  • Greet and track all VETS Center visitors. Screen and assist callers and email messages received at center's community email address.
  • Assist in procedures pertaining to intake, benefits, intervention, and institutional exits relevant to veteran/military affiliated student tracking.
  • Assist with on and off campus outreach events and functions. Provides VETS Center program information at education and veteran resource fairs (career, college, graduate school) and conferences. Maintains and staffs booth table space at on and off campus scheduled events.
  • Serves as outreach contact for prospective veteran/military affiliated students during the admissions and enrollment processes. Tracks, maintains roster, and reports to the VETS Center Director on all prospective candidate contacts, leads, and applicants.
  • Serves as the current enrolled veteran/military affiliated contact for providing connection with the VETS Center throughout their enrollment time at the university to help ensure successful completion of academic degree programs.
  • Engage in creative and critical thinking and planning sessions as it pertains to future programs, outreach, and new ways of providing access to programs for the university's veteran/military affiliated students.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines with outstanding organization skills and ability to pay attention to details for ensuring accuracy with all VA/DOD educational benefit certifications and record keeping.
  • Ability to maintain positive interpersonal relationships.

  • Ability to operate office equipment.
  • Ability to provide quality customer service.
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Southern Nazarene University is an expression of the Church of the Nazarene.   • An understanding of the importance of diversity, inclusion and equity.
  • Minimum of two years of related work experience and/or relevant training in handling of certification procedures for VA/DOD educational benefits.
  • Bachelor's degree or in the active process of obtaining a higher-level educational degree, to be completed within 3 years of employment.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple demands in fast paced work environment.
  • Possesses typing and spelling competency.
  • Experience with various computer software applications and with data entry experience.
  • Military experience or military dependent experience.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a veteran-oriented, team environment; can work collaboratively and cooperatively with other campus and off campus organizations. Work with minimal guidance.
  • Must possess a professional demeanor in appearance and attire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of local community agencies serving veterans, military service members, and military dependents.
  • Documented leadership experience.
  • Experience in higher education.

Physical and Environmental Demands:

  • Constantly requires sitting, repetitious finger and wrist movement, speaking clearly, hearing conversations, hearing (with acuity), seeing near and far with depth perception and color vision.
  • Occasionally requires standing, lifting, pulling, pushing, carrying, walking, and climbing, reaching both high and low.
  • Expect 75% of work to be primarily indoors in support of the primary purpose of the position providing administrative and processing support for all VA/DOD education benefits certifications in support of the VETS Center's veteran/military affiliated students. Expect 25% of the position to be combination indoors/outdoors in support of the secondary purpose of the position - outreach representative at campus and community events and functions for building awareness, understanding, and interest in SNU and in the VETS Center's role and programs.
  • Ability to interact verbally in person, over the telephone, and via written/electronic media.
  • General lifting to 35 pounds.

Supervision Received:

Receives supervision and work assignments from a designated supervisor, although other staff members on the team may provide work direction and priorities.

Supervision Exercised:

May be responsible for the coordination of work assignments for student workers.
