Summary:

The System Director, Senior Counsel - Litigation is an experienced health care litigator with significant prior experience in handling litigation in first and second chair roles, including trials.The System Director, Senior Counsel - Litigation leads the claims management process for all professional and general liability cases system-wide and for certain commercial and regulatory litigation or investigations in a manner that best protects CHRISTUS's core values, reputation, operational impact, and resources. The position, in collaboration with other department members oversees, tracks, evaluates, manages and resolves claims against CHRISTUS and its facilities in an equitable and cost-effective manner. Litigation management includes selecting, monitoring, setting budgets for and evaluating the performance of outside legal counsel; approving legal strategy; and overseeing the management of pre-trial discovery (including e-discovery preservation), evidence production and retention and setting and monitoring indemnity and expense reserves for open cases.The position also collaborates with other departments including participating in development of prevention/mitigation strategies as well as analysis of actual and potential risks to reduce losses and improve quality in both clinical and non-clinical areas of operation.The System Director, Senior Counsel - Litigation must be able to work collaboratively, cooperatively, and in teamwork with members of the Legal Department and other CHRISTUS staff to achieve results.

Education/Skills:

  • Juris Doctor degree
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal rules of procedure and mediation and arbitration practices and standards
  • Thorough knowledge of all health care related laws and regulations, including those relating to care provided in clinical settings
  • Good fundamental writing and analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work directly and communicate verbally and in writing with a large number of clients on multiple complex operations and transactions.
  • Ability to promptly and efficiently review, analyze and apply large amounts of information pertaining to such operations and transactions.
  • Ability to communicate with and provide support to Regional General Counsel and work as a cooperative team member.

Experience:

  • Eight or more years of health care related legal experience in a law firm or in-house counsel setting.

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:

  • Unrestricted license to practice law in Texas or Louisiana; benefit if both.
