Sustainability Manager
Reporting to the Energy & Engineering Manager, we are seeking a Sustainability Manager who will lead and execute a university-wide effort to prioritize and implement programs, strategies and projects focused assist Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) to minimize the environmental impact and reduce the carbon footprint.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the establishment and management of BSPH approach to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and carbon management.
  • Incorporate inclusive sustainability practices and approaches.
  • Focus on total life cycle of assets to maximize sustainability and minimize carbon footprint including but not limited to influencing of the following: design and construction standards, procurement, and operations.
  • Oversee the overall execution, mission, and efficacy of the sustainability program.
  • Coordinate and align BSPH Sustainability with JHU Sustainability vision while balancing BSPH operational considerations.
  • Establish and communicate BSPH sustainable efforts, achievements, and vision among BSPH students, faculty, staff, and JHU colleagues.
  • Collaborate with appropriate departmental leaders to facilitate sustainability evaluations that are timely and constructive.
  • Aggregate sustainable data and report to BSPH leadership as well as JHU Sustainability.
  • Work closely with the Energy & Engineering manager, section supervisors in the group, as well as leadership across BSPH, to maximize the impact to the organization to create and sustain excellence and cross-enterprise collaboration.
  • Assesses and analyze company guidance and processes to identify potential improvements which can be made in accordance with the organization's commitment to sustainability.
  • Brainstorm and identify creative ways in which the company can balance business obligations with the goal of respecting, supporting, and improving the local and global environments.
  • Analyze potential sustainable investments from a triple bottom line to facilitate transparent decision making.
  • Propose and implement strategies to address various environmental concerns including energy use, conservation, reduction of pollution, recycling, building operational design, and facility design, and general education on sustainability.
  • Draft and implement sustainable organizational guidance that addresses environmental concerns.
  • Participate in the development of BSPH design/construction standards and project requests for proposals (RFPs)
  • Evaluate the efficacy of sustainability programs; recommend and implement improvements as necessary.
  • Conduct research to identify environmental and sustainability concerns, interests, and issues.
  • Consider sustainability proposals with attention to factors such as cost-effectiveness, feasibility, indoor environmental quality, and ease of integration with other programs.
  • Draft and prepare reports, presentations, and proposals; presents proposals and recommendations to the BCFD leadership and other key stakeholders.
  • Maintain working knowledge of, and ensure compliance with, all applicable local, state, federal, and internal environmental laws, and regulations.
  • Research and plan for upcoming local, state, federal, and internal environmental laws, and regulations.
  • Benchmark sustainability practices and initiatives with those of related University affiliated research centers and federally funded research.
  • Identify and facilitate training as needed.


Scope of Responsibility

  • Campus wide and include all buildings that comprise of the BSPH campus, approximately 1.5 million gross square feet (gsf) of owned space. Geographical locations include: the Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) and the School of Nursing (SON).

  • Have knowledge of laboratory design, construction, and operation.
  • Possess strong communication, collaboration, customer service skills, and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and state and federal regulations and best practices in facilities management.
  • Ability to effectively schedule and lead team activities.
  • Ability to think strategically, lead change, and creative problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Possess the knowledge of sustainability practices, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Are self-motivated, a strong influencer and negotiator with demonstrated ability to assess situations, collaborate across the organization, make timely decisions, and communicate these decisions clearly and concisely.
  • Possess unquestionable integrity and the ability to effectively interact with all levels of staff.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID19. Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Environmental Sciences,Ssustainability, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Three years related and relevant experience.
  • Possess accreditation through one of the major industries accepted sustainability organizations such as LEED, WELL, ILFI, Green Globes, etc. with the ability to pursue others in the future.

Starting Salary Range: $52,230-$71,890-$91,550 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
