Description
The Nebraska Department of Transportation has an exciting opportunity for an accounting or business student to join our team and work with our Controller division. At the Nebraska Department of Transportation, we are responsible for the planning, development, design, construction, maintenance and administration of the state highway system. Our goals include preserving the billions of dollars Nebraskans have invested in their state highway system, making the highways safe and efficient, and accomplishing this in a timely and cost-effective manner. Examples of Work
Examples of Work:

• Perform indirect cost rate reviews/risk assessments of rates submitted by consultants, local public agencies, and Metropolitan Planning Organizations.
• Perform reviews of railroad labor/equipment billing rate calculations and supporting documentation.
• Perform final cost reviews/risk assessments of actual billings submitted by railroads, utilities, consultants, and local governmental units for reimbursement eligibility.
• Participate in the 2 CFR 200 subrecipient audit monitoring process.
• Create, update, and maintain permanent file folders.

Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: Must be a three-fourths time student in good standing majoring in a discipline or field related to the work to be assigned. Must be eligible to work in the United States.

PREFERRED: Student majoring in Accounting or Business Administration, or the equivalent, with at least 12 semester hours of accounting and auditing. Governmental or compliance auditing experience would be helpful.

OTHER: Valid drivers license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation is required. Applicants must be at least a three fourths time student and be able to work at least 10 hours a week when classes are in session. Temporary full-time employment may be available during scheduled school breaks. Employment up to 2080 hours or four years, whichever comes first. If employed to 2080 hours, student must take a 30-day break before returning to work. Regular and reliable attendance is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of auditing principles, standards and practices.

• Strong skills in utilizing Microsoft Office software programs including Word, Excel, and Access; and in navigating multiple computer programs simultaneously.

• Ability to work independently on multiple projects; meet deadlines; effectively communicate orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, third-party contractors and the general public; interpret and apply financial/accounting principles and various compliance and regulatory requirements to actual situations; exercise critical thinking, independent judgment, and decisiveness in appropriate situations.
