Responsibilities

Nurse practitioners who are employed by St. Christopher's Hospital for Children (SCHC)/St. Christopher's Pediatric Associates (SCPA) are independent providers and practice according to the State of Pennsylvania guidelines, By-Laws of SCHC and SCPA, and policies and procedures established by the Section of Developmental Pediatrics. Although the nurse practitioners can practice autonomously, they must work in collaboration with a physician who is available for consultation if needed.

In the Section of Developmental Pediatrics, the nurse practitioners are expected to provide comprehensive outpatient care for patients from birth to 21 years of age. The ideal NP candidates should have experience in the area of Developmental Pediatrics or Child Psychiatry and be familiar and comfortable assessing and diagnosing children for common developmental conditions (Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Delay/Speech Delay/Intellectual Disability, Learning Disorders, ADHD, behavioral/emotional problems, etc.) as well as providing follow-up care and pharmacological treatment if needed. (For some patients with chronic illness, e.g. Spina-Bifida, care may be delivered after the age of 21 years until adequate transition services are identified.) This care will include initial evaluation and diagnosis as well as follow-up neurodevelopmental assessment and medication management. In addition to performing a history and physical examination, offering a diagnosis, and establishing a treatment plan, the nurse practitioners will also order necessary laboratory studies, such as EKGs, EEGs, CT and MRI's. Rehabilitative services and medications will also be prescribed to the extent allowed by the prescriptive authority in the State of PA.

There will also be expectations of care coordination and there will be discussion of the patient's individual care plan with the collaborating physician or the Section Chief.

Nurse practitioners will maintain their own patient panels utilizing the following parameters:

  • New patients may be scheduled for an initial evaluation with an NP. The potential pool of patients eligible for an initial visit with an NP includes those with potential ADHD, Learning Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorders, language delay, motor delay, behavioral difficulties, or history of prematurity. If there is a suggestion of developmental regression, the patient will be scheduled with a physician for the initial visit.
  • Established patients, whether seen initially by an NP or one of the physicians, may be scheduled for follow-up visits with an NP. These patients may be seen for ongoing medication management or for developmental assessments related to the diagnoses listed above as well as additional diagnoses including but not limited to spina-bifida or cerebral palsy.
  • Scheduling for patient visits will be the same as for the physicians: 90 minutes for initial visits and follow-up neurodevelopmental assessments and 45 minutes for medication management visits.
  • Each NP will have a predetermined number of sessions per week established by the Section Chief. Each session (~ 4 hours) consists of a full panel of morning or afternoon patients.

    Qualifications

    • Master of Science in Nursing
    • Certification as Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (prefer Acute Care certification but will consider Primary Care if candidate has either NP or RN critical care experience)
    • Licensure to practice as a registered nurse in Pennsylvania
    • License to practice as a certified registered nurse practitioner in Pennsylvania
    • BLS and PALS required
    Some travel: Ravel to Reading Hospital 2 times per month
