Primary Function of Position:
 

Intuitive Surgical, Inc. produces the Ion Bronchoscopy system, a minimally invasive robotic catheter system that accesses deep into the lungs and offers treatment not possible with conventional tools

The Senior New Product Development engineer will lead catheter based design projects to sustain the Ion business. Projects will include new incremental design features, cogs improvements, manufacturability improvements and addressing complaints or yield issues to ensure we scale the Ion business successfully.

The senior engineer should have experience working in a matrixed environment and be particularly comfortable overlapping with catheter process development engineers. The ideal candidate has a background in catheter process development/ catheter manufacturing and wants to move towards product design or a background in catheter design and enjoys the attention to detail and rigor needed in a sustaining environment.

Role & Responsibilities:

 

  • Lead design and development activities for any design changes for new features or to address manufacturability or performance improvement gaps.
  • Interface with process development engineers and support improvements, modifications and further development of sustaining production lines for Catheter products.
  • Core team member representing design engineering in product development teams.
  • Drive robust design mindset and identify new designs to improve efficacy, reliability, manufacturability and cost.
  • Support process development engineers with process verification and validation activities.
  • Support complaint investigations and address any design related issues.
  • All work to be completed per applicable quality and regulatory requirements.

 

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:

  • Minimum BS in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or related engineering or scientific discipline required, MS or Higher Preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience developing catheter based medical devices
  • Expert in all phases of the product development lifecycle including requirements definition, prototyping, implementation, debug, risk management, verification and transfer to Manufacturing.
  • Solid modeling/CAD experience (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Experience with typical catheter manufacturing processes such as braiding, lamination, reflow etc
  • Experience with typical catheter assembly processes including laser welding, soldering, adhesive bonding etc
  • Experience scaling catheter manufacturing lines to remove operator dependance and increase throughput and yield
  • Solid understanding of process verification and process validation requirements for complex catheter products and demonstrated experience implementing such activities
  • Excellent communication, organization, follow-up and documentation skills.
  • Excellent critical thinking, troubleshooting, problem solving, and decision-making skills including demonstrated ability to effectively design, execute, report on, and draw conclusions from experiments.
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines in a complex, matrixed environment.
  • Self-motivated and independent thinker with ability to work independently without significant direction.
