The Senior Systems Engineer (Enterprise Knowledge Systems) is a firmwide position requiring strong development, analytical, problems solving, and critical thinking skills to analyze and resolve customer needs and challenges. The position is responsible for supporting, maintaining, and enhancing the Firm’s intranet and other knowledge systems. This includes the design, architecture, and development of on-prem and cloud web sites, workflows, intranet features and functionalities, and content. This position requires strong team skills, a positive attitude, rigorous work habit, and professionalism in the workplace as well as strong organizational, and multi-tasking skills. This is a firmwide, full-time, exempt position resident in our Houston office.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Knowledge Systems Platforms and Applications administration

  • Works with IT to maintain the Knowledge Services (KS) systems including the Firm’s intranet and library asset management systems.
  • Administers the Firm’s intranet platform to optimize performance and functionality.
  • Designs and architect data integrations with other Firm systems.
  • Troubleshoots issues related to the KS systems and products.
Intranet functionality, web sites, applications, features, workflows, forms development, and integrations
  • Works with the Enterprise Knowledge Services (EKS) team to architect and develop firm intranet sites on prem and in the cloud.
  • Designs and creates custom functionality and features in a SharePoint environment using current programing and scripting languages such as C# and JavaScript.
  • Develops workflows and forms to automate various business processes; documents business processes; designs, develops, tests, and publishes workflows and forms.
  • Understands and uses built-in SharePoint features to develop additional functionality.
  • Designs and creates integrations with other Firm systems including financial services, human resources, and client relationship management systems.
Quality Assurance Testing
  • Assists with quality assurance/testing of new products, features and functionality in the Firm’s business and knowledge management systems.
Intranet Content Development, Management, and Publishing
  • Assists in providing content development and publishing support to offices, administrative departments, and practice departments.
Customer and Project Support
  • Works directly with internal business customers to support development and management of KS systems and products including intranet sites, forms, workflows, and functionality.

Qualifications:

Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems or related field, or 4 years of professional experience in related fields.
  • At least 2 years’ experience working with SQL Server 2016 or later (including relational database design, creation of views, stored procedures, DTS programming, and SSRS reporting).
  • At least 5 years’ experience programming in any web related language.
  • Strong work ethic, solid team-oriented skills, and works well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in SharePoint Administration. Strong understanding of Search preferred.
  • Experience in the design and development of workflows.
  • Experience in the design and architecture of web applications and web sites.
  • Experience in web-based content development, management, and visualization.
  • Strong familiarity and experience working in SharePoint (2013 or 2019), including familiarity with SharePoint Designer; creation of document libraries, lists, and workflows; and creation/manipulation of webparts.
  • Experience in creating SharePoint forms, especially using Qdabra FormsViewer.
  • Experience in writing in one of: JavaScript, ASPX, C#, Java or other programming language.
  • Experience in HTML, CSS, XSL, and XML documents.
  • Experience with SQL databases, stored procedures, and SSIS packages.
  • Experience in generating reports; experience in SSRS a plus.
  • Understanding of the design and application of hierarchical security systems.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Excel, including pivot tables, creating formulas, use of functions, data filtering and creating charts.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Word, including the proper use of styles, automatic numbering, and merge features.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Strong detail orientation.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to learn new software systems and business processes quickly and to self-teach, when necessary.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and competing/changing priorities.
Preferred
  • Experience with Cloud and Office 365 integrations.
  • Experience with SharePoint Online, Microsoft Azure, PowerApps/Power Platform.
  • Experience with maintaining or supporting other cloud applications.
  • Familiarity with the typical administrative support areas and business processes of a multi-office law or professional services firm.
  • Experience working in a support services role in a large, multi-office law or professional services firm environment.

Extent of Contact (Within and outside the Firm)

The Senior Systems Engineer requires contact with various people both internal and external to the Firm in the form of meetings (in person and virtually), emails, messages, and presentations.

Internal:
  • a high degree of contact with KS managers and KS technical staff.
  • a moderate degree of contact with members of office, administrative support services, practice departments, IT and service desk staff.
  • a low to moderate degree of contact with lawyers and staff in all offices.
External:
  • a moderate degree of contact with representatives of vendors of the Firm who provide or would like to provide products or services to the KS Department.
  • Position requires a moderate degree of contact with industry/peer organizations.
Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to work at a computer for eight to ten hours at a time.
  • Must be able to routinely lift and carry files and other items up to 10 pounds.
  • Must be able to function in a standard office environment.
Working Condition and Environment:
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior office work environment.
  • This position is a full-time position requiring a 5-day work week and standard hours as outlined in the firm policy manual.
  • Must be available after hours and on weekends when necessary to meet established deadlines, address high priority alerts or stay current with occasional peaks in workload.
  • This position may require travel to the firm’s U.S. offices. Required travel may, at times, involve multiple-day trips requiring overnight stays.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical office work environment or remotely per the current office policy and guidelines.
  • Fully vaccinated for COVID-19, subject to accommodation.
  • This role may be hybrid and will require a minimum of three days per week (or at least 60%) present in the office, and up to two days per week (40%) may be performed remotely.
