Job Description

Senior Lean UX Researcher and/or Designer - REMOTE position

Flexion is seeking a Senior Lean UX Researcher/Designer to join a cross functional agile development team.

Why you want to work at Flexion:

Flexion pursues and wins work that improves people's lives, and we know that sustained success comes from creating a fun culture that enables and trusts our people. We empower people and teams to manage themselves by hiring people who can solve complex problems through collaboration, and by providing expert peer coaching. This means lending a hand and flexing your multi-skilled muscles as needed. Every member within Flexion's teams is a leader who takes responsibility for the team's success, which mirrors the company's low-bureaucracy structure.

What the job looks like:

As a member of a cross-functional agile development team, you'll partner with our clients to tackle holistic business and user problems. You'll help build HCD thinking into everything the team does.

Specifically, you'll:

  • Lead and facilitate "continuous discovery" and research to understand needs, goals, constraints, and generate insights that shape the user experience.
  • Lead and facilitate frequent design workshops using methods such as the "Design Studio Method" or other collaborative methods.
  • Iteratively perform and coach sketching, prototyping, creating mockups, testing, and iterating on designs.
  • Lead and facilitate and analyze client and user feedback to identify opportunities to improve the overall user experience throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Lead and facilitate content audits, heuristic reviews, user journeys, card sorting, creating personas, modeling workflows, information architecture.
  • Effectively communicate goals, designs, research, feedback, ideas, and requirements (both verbally and visually, when needed) to client stakeholders.
  • Facilitate and coach other team members on basic Web Accessibility Standards.
  • Drive the development and enhancement of reusable design systems.
  • Pair or mob with other members of a cross-functional development team.

Flexion is a remote first company. It is imperative that you have a reliable internet connection. We rely on Zoom for meetings and communications. We strive to balance "heads down" time with active engagement and find "cameras on" can help our teams be present and build relationships. Some travel to client sites may be requested. You must reside in the United States of America.

Why we want to hire you:

You have a passion for using and coaching human centered design techniques and Lean UX methods. You iteratively and incrementally drive learning and development by embracing agile methodologies. You excel at designing small pieces, while still thinking about how they fit into the whole.

You love solving big business and user problems. You can balance high-level strategy with detail-oriented tactics. You're just as at home leading a discovery session with C-level executives as you are sketching prototype ideas in a design studio session. You actively co-create designs and solutions throughout the process.

You're a self-starter and don't need to be told what to do next. You have a wide range of UX-related skills and can flex different muscles as required. You value consistency-but also know when to customize user experiences to improve usability. You value data-driven decision-making, but won't become paralyzed if the data doesn't exist.

You are eager to lend a hand with testing, documentation, or other tasks needed to get the product in front of users quickly. You love working collaboratively, sharing knowledge and learning from others across your team and the greater Flexion ecosystem. You aren't afraid to step up to help the organization when you see a need.

You have:

  • At least 8 recent years working on UX designs for clients
  • At least 4 recent years experience working with agile methodologies
  • At least 1 recent years of Lean UX experience working with agile methodologies
  • A bias toward performing research and design work collaboratively with other developers and stakeholders
  • A "can do" attitude devoid of ego
  • Successfully coached teams and clients
  • Superb time-management, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience leading and facilitate user interviews
  • Experience analyzing, drawing, and sharing insights from interview data.
  • Experience designing for complex data systems and enterprise applications
  • Experience facilitating and leading usability tests
  • Experience designing and documenting user interactions and user flows
  • Experience designing prototypes at varying levels of fidelity; sometimes on-the-fly
  • Experience using prototyping tools such as a pen/napkin, Mural, Adobe Creative Suite, Invision, FIgma, etc.
  • Using workflow and modeling tools such as Mural, LucidChart, etc
  • Knowledge of responsive design principles and 508/accessibility compliance standards
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

At Flexion, we live by these principles:

  • Speak openly and honestly with your colleagues and clients about problems and proposed solutions
  • Welcome and handle changing requirements and priorities with little or no warning
  • Collaborate online in small groups about 50% of the time
  • Encourage simple and minimal solutions that keep options open
  • Expect and vocally advocate for quality first
  • Learn new practices and techniques as the situation demands
  • Ensure the teams develop demonstrable software every week or two
  • Do what needs to be done to deliver the product or project without ego or attitude
  • Dig deep to find the root causes of problems so we can create the right solutions
  • Relentlessly improve yourself, your team, and your processes
