The School of Medicine’s Division of Clinical Immunology has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Senior Laboratory Science Professional position.Jobs in the Research Services career family provide direct professional support of research activities.  Functions include contracts and grants solicitation and administration, grant/agreement preparation, review and negotiation, regulatory compliance, sponsor communication and post and pre award management, human subject compliance, research animal management, research laboratory coordination and instruction, environmental health and safety, radiation control, hazardous materials use, disposal and training.Senior Laboratory Science Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field.  At the senior level, work is performed fully independently.Nature of WorkSenior Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in an experimental lab, or wet lab, and handle a variety of chemicals and/or potential “wet” hazards. Senior Laboratory Science Professionals perform duties in laboratories where chemicals, drugs, or other materials or biological matters are tested and analyzed. Some Assignments will not move beyond this level.We are seeking a highly motivated, bright and qualified candidate to join Dr. Brent Palmer’s laboratory in the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. The applicant will help to support research and clinical activities in the lab and will have the opportunity to learn a wide variety of laboratory techniques.  Ideally, the applicant will have experience generating single-cell suspensions from various tissues and isolation of PBMC from blood. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in flow cytometry and other relevant immunological techniques. The main focus of the lab is understanding immune responses to the two most important pandemics causing diseases of our time; HIV and SARS-CoV-2. Research projects are also focused on understanding how the gut microbiome contributes to HIV disease progression and SARS-CoV-2 infection and the immunological factors responsible for long-COVID. The applicant will also help support our blood cancer biobank by processing patient samples and our flow cytometry core facility by training users to operate flow cytometers, cell sorting, and maintain instruments. The applicant should be reliable, self-motivated and have strong problem-solving skills. The lab has stable funding and is looking for a long-term employee, but it is also an ideal environment for someone wanting to get experience for graduate or medical school. The applicant will enjoy working in a fun and easy-going lab with many opportunities for acquiring new skills.     Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functionsUtilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze researchSupport analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting and communicating resultsPerform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical test process and evaluate results producedPrepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areasProvide animal care related to research studies, as necessaryPick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials and other items as neededDispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructionsReview, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and informationProvide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit and related issuesReview and implement lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needsEnsure compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when requiredIndependently and creatively identify laboratory solutionsIndependently Review, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projectsAssist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiativesAssist and train junior team membersAssist with developing or develop protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) . Maintains subject level documentation and prepares documents, equipment and/or suppliesAssist with identifying issues related to operational efficiency and shares results with leadershipProvide laboratory science expertise and leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of investigators, researchers and clinicians on new research activities across a wide range of disciplinesServe as a resource to PIs and other stakeholders
Additional Duties & Responsibilities
    Perform cell isolation and cryopreservation of PBMC (peripheral blood mononuclear cells) from blood and single-cell suspension from different tissue types.Calibrate and operate a variety of laboratory instruments.Assist in maintaining the biobank and keeping an excellent record using REDCap.Handle delivering, receiving, and retrieving frozen samples from freezers and physical inventory of frozen samples in liquid nitrogen and -80 freezers. Presenting data or updating projects at weekly lab meeting. Potential to perform a wide range of flow-based assays such as antibody titration, surface staining, immunophenotyping, and intracellular cytokine assay (ICS).Support and assist team members and researchers from other divisions on research projects, experimental designs, and laboratory-based methodologies.Assist in various other projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
    Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related fieldA combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
Two (2) years professional level research experienceRequired: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.Preferred Qualifications
