Job Summary:
Eastern Washington University, a regional comprehensive university, is seeking a Senior Grant Writer & Proposal Developer. The successful candidate will actively seek out grant opportunities and coordinate the development of grant proposals that will help to grow programs, increase the number of submissions across all disciplines at the University. The Grant Writer will identify, define, and develop funding sources to support existing and planned program activities as well as lead the development, writing, and submission of grant proposals to federal, state, and private funding agencies.

Primary responsibilities include researching potential funding sources and preparing summaries to respond to faculty and administration areas of interest, support the preparation of preparation of proposals and grant applications, and responding to public and private grant opportunities in areas that support the research enterprises Eastern Washington University.

This position requires the kind of teamwork, supervision, and personal interaction that cannot be had in home office situation; therefore, regular, and predictable on-site attendance is a job requirement.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree
  • Two years of experience directly related to research development, proposal development, technical writing, and/ or prior experience in a university office of sponsored programs, office of development, or nonprofit organization writing and submitting grant proposals,
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work on a team and make complex decisions with a high level of initiative and judgment in a variety of situations.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail,
  • Demonstrated progressive experience providing advanced research planning and proposal preparation in academia,
  • Demonstrated budget development experience,
  • Knowledge of compliance as it relates to grants and contracts,
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a proactive manner
  • Demonstrated interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and/or diversity.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in a related field,
  • Experience developing, writing, editing, and reviewing multi-investigator or multi-institution grant applications,
  • Experience designing or implementing training and developing materials for grant writing/proposal development.
  • Working knowledge using grant searching databases,
  • Working understanding of electronic research administration portals such as Grants.gov, Research.gov and eRA Commons

Responsibility / Duty: Pursue and submit Grants
  • Actively pursue appropriate grant-funded opportunities and regularly submit grant proposals.
  • Consult with various key units such as Institutional Research to obtain information necessary for the development of fundable institutional proposals, including information required to address specific grant criteria.
  • Evaluate the overall needs of proposals and determine proposal strategy, direction, and course of action.
  • Lead budget development and narrative.
  • Submit proposals on behalf of the University.

Responsibility / Duty: Support EWU faculty, staff, and administrators’ successful grant writing efforts
  • Lead campus teams in the design and development of competitive proposals that advance institutional initiatives, and task out grant-writing responsibilities.
  • Understand and be able to explain grant regulations and guidelines, federal regulations and the Uniform Guidance to non-experts;
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of sponsor, state, and federal regulations governing submission of proposals for external funding;
  • Determine proposal concepts by identifying and clarifying opportunities and needs. Study requests for proposals (RFPs). Coordinate overall strategy with faculty and other stakeholders and advise on policies and procedures related to proposal preparation as needed;
  • Participate in work groups for institution-wide projects requiring the cooperation of multiple departments/units and serve as project manager for such initiatives;
  • Revise and provide feedback on drafts provided by others, including letters of interest, executive summaries, research plans, facilities, data management plans, and organizational resources. Review final application by evaluating overall content;
  • Track, manage, and communicate timelines and deadlines to achieve timely proposal submissions;
  • Proofread proposals for clarity, coherence, organization, and adherence to call for proposal, including correcting minor typographical and other writing errors;
  • Become familiar with grant-makers’ electronic submission requirements;
  • Aid in the development of letters of commitment for the signatures of President, Provost and Deans as needed;
  • Assemble all proposal submission components including but not limited to: need, objectives, outcomes and deliverables, chart, tables, and evaluation, and prepare for submission.

Responsibility / Duty: Build capacity in successful grant writing throughout EWU
  • Routinely review and analyze funding databases, announcements and websites to identify funding opportunities and distribute these opportunities to EWU faculty and staff on a regular basis;
  • Provides guidance and leadership to less experienced grant writers by reading, evaluating, critiquing, and making suggestions for improvements in their work, as necessary.
  • Apply technical expertise to strengthen and improve proposal-writing process, evaluating and re-designing strategies, approaches, and policies;
  • Regularly meet with faculty and staff to discuss current and new funding needs;
  • Maintain positive relationships with faculty, staff and funders.

Conditions of Employment:
This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

All new employees must comply with EWU Immunization Policy 602-02 and provide proof of immunity or vaccination to MMR and proof they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before beginning work at EWU. Waivers for the immunization requirements are available for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs. Upon hire – You must complete required DEI, Hazing, and Harassment and Title IX training. Salary Information: The salary for this position is $62,489 (minimum) up to $83,000. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on education, experience and skills.
