Departmental Objective:

The Department of Theater & Dance maintains two interlocking and equally important educational components: traditional classroom and practical production.

Purpose of the Position:

The Scenic Shop Supervisor is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of the Scene Shop during the specified office hours as determined by the University and the Department of Theater. These hours are currently specified as Monday - Friday 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM. Moreover, the position will supervise and instruct students in a lab setting for theater productions. It will collaborate with Technical Director and/or designers to ensure productions are built to specifications. Additionally, the position will set-up and prepare work areas, load-in and strike productions, and attend technical rehearsals and performances as assigned.
It will assign duties to student workers and student assistants, establish and prioritize work schedules to ensure production schedules are met, check and approve work, and ensure that the shop is maintained in a safe and clean manner.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) and/or Competencies required and preferred:

Required:

Ability to read/interpret blueprints and other production drawings such as floor plans, sections and working drawings

Understanding of language and terms specific to scenic construction, rigging and the art of theater are essential.

Ability to operate all kinds of construction tools and equipment specific to theatrical construction

Ability to understand/execute construction techniques

Good knowledge of set design

Knowledge of counter-weight systems and basic rigging

Ability to work a flexible schedule

Ability to wear protective gear and tolerate noise, dust, and fumes from paints and dyes

Ability to tolerate bending, kneeling, twisting, lifting, walking and standing throughout workday

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Ability to work from heights (such as ladders and/or grids)

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Required :

Education Required: Bachelor's degree or higher; or high school diploma or equivalent with experience and/or training that equates to the degree requirement.

Experience Required: Experience as a Theatrical Shop Foreman and/or Scenic Shop Supervisor.

Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification Preferred :

Experience Preferred: Previous technical theatrical shop experience in an educational setting. Previous theatrical rigging or metal working experience. Previous related supervisory experience. Previous experience using counter weight systems and basic rigging. Previous experience drafting blueprints.

This is an HOURLY position and does NOT entitle the incumbent to Commonwealth of Virginia benefits and is limited to 1500 hours in a 365-day period;

Selected candidate must have the ability to work a flexible schedule;

Selected candidate must have the ability to work from heights (such as ladders and/or grids);

Selected candidate will be required to attend a 2-Day New Employee Orientation Program.
