SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Donor Nurse Flow Manager,Kraft Family Blood Donor Center provides leadership and managerial oversight ofthe Donor staff with responsibility for daily operations including evaluatingcapacity of services and is accountable for facilitating the daily review andplanning for appropriate staffing level in responses to volume variations. Theseresponsibilities include ensuring procedural training and support for a varietyof services provided by the department, including but not limited to:

1. Allogenic collections of whole blood, plasma andplatelets

2. Therapeutic Phlebotomy

3. Occasional research protocols

The Donor Nurse Flow Manager in Kraft Family Blood Donor Center isa member of the Departmental Clinical Operations and Department of PathologyTeams. The Flow Manager works in collaboration with the Blood Bank to manageshared services; whole blood, plasma and platelet needs, coordination of drivesand product delivery, and implementation of regulatory guidelines impactingjoint services.The Donor Nurse Flow Manager is also responsible for the operations in thedonor center as well as the mobile unit, which operates in the communitythroughout Massachusetts 5-6 days per week for the collection of wholeblood. This is a seamless operation with staff rotating between the donor centerand the mobile unit several time per week. Hours of operation for both thecenter and mobile unit averages between 6:15a and 8:30pm. Workscollaboratively with physicians for therapeutics phlebotomy patients to coordinatetreatment plan and manage patient experience and outcome. The Flow Managerreports to the Nurse Director for Pathology. Responsibilities include allelements of the BWH Ambulatory RN Flow Manager Job Description including thehiring, management and evaluation of an interprofessional team.

TheFlow Manager establishes and maintains a highly synergistic interactions toenhance relationships with key stakeholders. These include, but are not limitedto: Blood Bank, Inpatient units and Transport. The Nurse Flow Manager is responsiblefor accurate, updated, available evidence based clinical care guidelines andstandard operating procedures as well as ensuring employee orientation, sharedcompetency and annual validation of knowledge though a shared learning andprofessional development strategy with all nursing, technicians andinterprofessional team members.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Leadership: Coordinate and expedite clinicaloperations including, but not limited to:

a. Directs, delegates and monitors quality of care delivered by the donorteam.

b. Functions within and across interdisciplinary teams in a mannerthat promotes coordination, mutual respect and timely response to staffing and patient'sand donor healthcare needs.

c. Role models and facilitates change within the team to respond toemerging practice, staffing, regulatory, organizational and departmental needs.

d. Models and promotes team building and leadership skills. Appliesleadership skills to facilitate effective team functioning and operations ofthe department.

2. Management

a. Provides clinical oversight and support as needed to staff incollaboration with the Nursing Director, Medical Director and Practice Manager.

b. Assumes accountability for timely evaluation of performance andongoing feedback for staff

c. Oversees the training of new staff and ensure completion of documentation

d. Ensures direct observations and competency quizzes are doneannually

e. Manages ongoing training of staff including Vendor-based training.

f. Managing a diverse group of approximately 25 highlyskilled technicians and nurses, understanding the team's contribution to thisspecialized area, leveraging strength and supporting the team through challengesand growth

g. Fostering critical thinking and decision making

h. Support staff involvement in committees and research projects

i. Promote professional growth, facilitate staff participationin related conferences and coordinate Continuing Education.

j. Support/encourage staff pursuit of certification

k. Have knowledge of HR policies and develop collaborativerelationship with HR Business Partner

  • Quality, Safety and Regulatory Compliance.
  • Collaborates with Quality Specialist in maintaining quality standards for procedures and in the development and revision of relevant policies and procedures.
  • Ensure department readiness for inspection by FDA, AAB and JC
  • Follow up on all moderate and severe adverse events related to procedure
  • Ensures collections of platelets, plasma and whole blood meet quality standards (cGMP, AABB and FDA)
  • Shares quality data with staff, develops and implements new quality initiatives and monitors process improvement with staff and interprofessional team


  • Qualifications
    Qualifications

    Education and License:

    • Graduated from anapproved school of nursing.

    • BSN required;Masters preferred.

    • Current license topractice as a registered nurse in the State of Massachusetts.

    • Currentcertification required or to be attained within two-years of hire and must bemaintained while employed in this position.

    Experience:

    • 5 years of experiencein Donor Services, Dialysis or infusion preferred.

    • Leadershipexperience within the past 5 years, required with proven record of managingdiverse, interprofessional team members

    Skills include:

    • Continually updateclinical knowledge & skills through formal and informal educationand review of the current literature.

    • Proven ability to workwell independently, possess sound decision-making skills and work effectivelywhen required to make and facilitate complex decisions.
