Description:

Under the general supervision of the Coordinator and the Manager of Respiratory Care, provides intensive and general respiratory care services to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients upon receiving written prescriptions from a physician or per approved medical center protocol. RCP II Professional Pool staff will be trained in all accountabilities and standards for adult patient care as specified in the regular RCP II staff job description, and in addition will be trained in either neonatal or pediatric patient care, or both, based on Department needs.

Initiate, monitor, and adjust oxygen/humidity devices.(Adult Care required; Neonatal/Pediatric Care as needed per Department.) a. Know the indications for, application of and hazards associated with oxygen/humidity administration devices so that an informed dialogue can occur with the patient, their physician, or other health care providers should questions or problems arise. b. Initiate and adjust oxygen/humidity devices in accordance with physician's orders and in compliance with department standards. c. Monitor patient response to oxygen/humidity therapy by accurately interpreting arterial blood gases and recognizing clinical signs and symptoms of hypoxia or inadequate airway humidification. Know the responses to adverse reactions to oxygen therapy. d. Promptly inform the physician when a patient's condition warrants a change in oxygen/humidity delivery device or concentration. e. Accurately document oxygen/humidity therapy usage, according to department standards in a complete and timely manner.

Perform airway care procedures in a safe and aseptic manner to maintain airway patency. (Adult Care required; Neonatal/Pediatric Care as needed per Department.) a. Know the indications, contraindications, and hazards associated with artificial airways and suctioning so that an informed dialogue can occur with the patient, their physician, or other health care providers should questions or problems arise. b. Know the proper use and maintenance of oro and nasopharyngeal airways, endotracheal tubes, tracheostomy tubes, and suctioning equipment so that airway care procedures are performed efficiently and safely. c. Competently clear the upper and lower airways of retained secretions when indicated in accordance with departmental procedure. d. Monitor the patient's response to suctioning. Know the response to potential adverse reactions. e. Accurately document the outcome for suctioning procedures according to department standards in a complete and timely manner.

Perform bronchial hygiene therapies, including Medication Nebulizer, Incentive Spirometry, Chest Physical Therapy, Airway Clearance Therapies, Metered Dose Inhaler, IPPB, E-ZPap Therapy, Ultrasonic Nebulization, and other treatments. (Adult Care required; Neonatal/Pediatric Care as needed per Department.) a. Know the indications (including medical director's protocols), contraindications, and hazards associated with bronchial hygiene therapy and its associated medications so that an informed dialogue can occur with the patient, their physician, or other health care providers should questions or problems arise. b. Select, assemble, and operate associated equipment according to department policy and/or manufacturers specifications. c. Explain planned therapy and its goals to the patient in a courteous and professional manner. d. Perform specified therapy in accordance with physician's orders and in compliance with departmental standards. e. Monitor patient's tolerance of therapy. Know the responses to potential adverse reactions. f. Accurately document bronchial hygiene therapy according to department standards in a complete and timely manner.

Initiate and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in emergency situations. (Adult Care required; Neonatal/Pediatric Care as needed per Department.) a. Demonstrate competence in the indications, contraindications, rationale, and technique of CPR by passing an American Heart Association course in CPR on a bi-annual basis. b. Promptly respond to Resuscitation alerts as assigned and initiate CPR as necessary. c. Assist the intubating physician in the management of the patient's airway, perform manual ventilation as needed, and assist with chest compressions as requested. d. Accurately document the outcome of resuscitation attempts according to department standards in a complete and timely manner.

Calibrate, initiate, and maintain arterial oximeter's to provide continuous or intermittent measurement of arterial oxygen saturations. (Adult Care required; Neonatal/Pediatric Care as needed per Department.) a. Know the normal values for and clinical significance of data acquired by arterial oximeter's to so that an informed dialogue can occur with the patient, their physician, or other health care providers should question or problems occur. b. Accurately calibrate and carefully apply arterial oximeter's in accordance with department procedures. c. Monitor the performance of arterial oximeter's to insure proper function and observe patient condition in accordance with department procedures. d. Use professional clinical judgement to assess the accuracy of readings. Know the responses to potential adverse reactions. Promptly notify the physician when a patient's condition requires medical attention. e. Accurately document oximeter performance and patient condition according to department standards in a complete and timely manner.

Initiate monitor, and adjust non-invasive CPAP devices. (Adult Care required; Neonatal/Pediatric Care as needed per Department.) a. Know the indications, contraindications, hazards, and management technique associated with non-invasive CPAP devices so that an informed dialogue can occur with the patient, their physician, and other health care providers should problems or questions arise. b. Competently assemble and test non-invasive CPAP devices for adult application in accordance with department procedures. c. Initiate non-invasive CPAP devices and use professional judgement to assess the adequacy of ventilatory support. d. Competently operate all non-invasive CPAP devices in accordance with department procedures and/or manufacturers specifications. Know the responses to potential adverse reactions.

Promptly consult a physician when the patient's condition requires medical attention. e. Accurately document non-invasive CPAP device performance and patient condition according to department standards in a complete and timely manner.

Initiate monitor, and adjust mechanical ventilators. (Adult Care required; Neonatal/Pediatric Care as needed per Department.) a. Know the indications, contraindications, hazards, and management techniques associated with mechanical ventilation so that an informed dialogue can occur with the patient, their physician, and other health care providers should problems or questions arise. b. Competently assemble and test mechanical ventilators for patient application in accordance with department procedures. c. Initiate mechanical ventilation and use

professional judgement to assess the adequacy of ventilatory support. d. Competently operate all ventilators in accordance with department procedures and/or manufacturers specifications. Know the responses to potential adverse reactions. Promptly consult a physician when the patient's condition requires medical attention. e. Assist the transportation of mechanically ventilated patients by providing portable ventilation or manual ventilation for the duration of the transport. f. Accurately document ventilator performance and patient condition according to department standards in a complete and timely manner.

Calibrate, initiate, and maintain cardio-respiratory monitoring equipment to provide continuous or intermittent measurement of physiologic parameters. (Adult Care required; Neonatal/Pediatric Care as needed per Department.) a. Know the normal values for and clinical significance of data acquired by cardio-respiratory monitors to so that an informed dialogue can occur with the patient, their physician, or other health care providers should question or problems occur. b. Accurately calibrate and carefully apply cardio-respiratory monitors in accordance with department procedures. c. Monitor the performance of cardio-respiratory monitors to insure proper function and observe patient condition in accordance with department procedures. d. Use professional judgement to assess the accuracy of readings. Know the responses to potential adverse reactions. Promptly notify the physician when a patient's condition requires medical attention. e. Accurately document monitor performance and patient condition according to department standards in a complete and timely manner.

Act as a clinical resource in respiratory care. a. Function as a preceptor for a new employees or respiratory care students upon request. b. Promote state of the art respiratory care techniques. c. Promptly consult with physicians when a patient's condition requires a change in

respiratory therapy. Address inappropriately ordered therapy in a professional manner.

Perform other related duties deemed necessary for the efficient operation of the Respiratory Care Department.

III. Position Requirements:

Minimum Education:

Required: Associates Degree OR equivalent training acquired via work experience or education

Preferred: Bachelors Degree

Specify Degree(s): Completion of accredited respiratory care program

Minimum Experience:

Required: Less than one year of previous job-related experience

Preferred: 1-2 years of previous job-related experience

Licensure/Certifications:

Required:

Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT)

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)

Current Respiratory Care License State of Illinois

Preferred:

ACLS (Advanced Cardio Life Support Certified)

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Recognition

PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)

Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

Other: CRT credential and Respiratory Care License for State of Illinois must be obtained within 6 months from date of hire. NRP is required for Primary NeoNatal practitioners.
