Mass. Eye and Ear physicians are located at our main campus in Boston, and at our suburban locations in the greater Boston and Providence areas, across 21 locations.

POSITION SUMMARY:

We seek a highly motivated Research Technologist to join a research laboratory at Schepens Eye Research Institute of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear in Boston, MA. The successful candidate will carry out a broad range of research activities studying the molecular genetics and functional genomics of photoreceptor cells, understanding the genetic bases of inherited retinal degenerative diseases, analyze gene networks, and test gene therapies using in vivo animal models and ex vivo models. The person must be reliable, very organized, pro-active, independent, able to pay attention to detail, and multi-task.

Experiences: Our ideal candidate will be an independent and motivated professional with expertise in molecular biology (i.e., PCR, DNA/RNA isolation and purification, cloning, RT-PCR, qPCR, recombinant protein expression and purification), cell or tissue based assays and standard biochemistry skills for functional studies of proteins (protein extraction, western blot, immunohistochemistry, familiar with basic bioinformatics skills, including blast, sequence alignments, primer or probe design. Candidates with additional knowledge and hands-on experience in caring for and maintaining animal colonies (particularly mice) is preferred. Animal husbandry and evaluations are an essential component of the job.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Generates and interprets information obtained from graphs, charts, laboratory experiments, statistical summaries and other data collection methods in order to develop new investigative techniques and/or to determine the most appropriate direction of research.
  • Prepares reports and/or presentations on status of research, determination of technical procedures, and sequence of operations, including statistical and graphic summaries of findings and possible conclusions. Collaborates with supervisor in writing and editing material for publication and may appear as co- author on publications.
  • Carries out a wide range of moderate to complex lab techniques including: animal work; histology; histochemistry; microscopy; and molecular and cellular biology. Independently modifies techniques as necessary to meet research and/or experimental needs and troubleshoot research results.
  • Operates and maintains moderate to complex lab equipment such as microscopes, microtomes and other scientific equipment related to research activity.
  • Work with animal models, including but not limited to: caring for and maintaining animal colonies; preparation for and performance of surgical procedures; post-surgical care of animals (as necessary); and harvesting/working with animal organs/tissues.
  • Provides functional guidance and immediate supervision to lower level technical personnel or student.
  • May teach moderately difficult to complex lab techniques to students and research personnel.
  • Monitors supplies inventory.


  • Qualifications
    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or a related field, with experience working in a research lab preferable. The ideal candidate will have experience with molecular biology techniques such as PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, etc.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Laboratory environment.
