GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.

The Laboratory Research Technician I serves to assist a Principal Investigator in basic science research activities in the area of molecular genetics of brain cancer. Primary responsibilities are to assist in experiments for research projects under supervision of the project head and the PI of the laboratory. This includes setting up and conducting a variety of laboratory tests and experiments by applying established methods, procedures, and techniques in a neurosurgery tumor research laboratory.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

Research/Experiments

  • Performs lab work to include basic design and modification of protocols and also execution of protocols of non-routine experiments.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots and corrects or recommends solutions to problems associated with experimental methods, procedures and techniques; or equipment and facilities.
  • Develops and implements new or modified research methods, procedures and techniques to meet research requirements. Incorporates new procedures into existing lab protocols and follows new protocols.
  • Performs basic molecular biology techniques including PCR amplification, gel electrophoresis, transfection and purification of plasmid DNA.
  • Ensures adherence to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.

Data Collection

  • Keeps a detailed laboratory and well-organized record of research performed and results obtained in the form of a lab notebook that is easy for others to read, understand, and repeat the procedures described.
  • Prepares appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, charts, and scientific posters to present in lab meeting and at national meetings.
  • Participation in laboratory meetings and oral presentations of research findings and summaries of research papers.
  • Continuing education through reading and researching relevant scientific literature.

Laboratory Management

  • Oversees the day-to-day management of the laboratory to ensure proper use, maintenance, and availability of equipment of supplies.
  • Responsible for ordering and maintaining general and specialized lab supplies and reagents.
  • Maintenance and organization of laboratory stocks to include tumor and normal blood samples, tissue culture cells, plasmid DNAs, and restriction enzymes and other relevant reagents.
  • Unpacking, placing and documenting receipt of general and specialized supplies.
  • Maintains records of invoices, tracks spending on grants, and acts to correct incorrect charges.
  • Instructs others in laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques and provides technical guidance and direction as required.
  • Locates manufacturers and suppliers for equipment.


Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)

Bachelor's degree with a major in one of the Biological Sciences or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Lab-based coursework is a requirement.

One year of relevant laboratory or science experience.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: (MUST be realistic, measurable, objective, and related to the essential functions of the job.)

  • Competence and knowledge in several laboratory methods including molecular biology, protein chemistry, immunohistochemistry and biochemistry.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member with other lab members (fellows, students, etc.) with good judgment, organization, attention to detail, and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage laboratory inventory and records.
  • Ability to problem-solve, utilizing analytical skills and technical knowledge.
  • Ability to appropriately use data management programs.
  • Ability and willingness to work safely with/be exposed to hazardous materials such as radioactive materials, infectious materials, and/or hazardous chemicals.
  • Ability to sustain working long stretches of time at desk, computer, or lab bench.
  • Ability to lift and install equipment such as centrifuge rotors for certain experiments
  • Good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to complete tasks, as well as visual acuity to analyze results.
  • Clear, understandable, effective oral and written communication and English proficiency necessary to perform job skills in research reports (written and seminar format), teaching and in question and answer round table discussions.
  • Good math skills, library skills, documentation techniques, time management, and organizational techniques in routine duties.
  • Knowledge of computers and software (incl. spreadsheet) applications.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.

Duties will be performed in a research laboratory.

Work will be conducted over a forty-hour workweek, but actual schedule can be flexible.
