Job Summary

The Department of Biomedical Sciences and Comprehensive Care is seeking a Research Technician to assist the Principal Investigator, Dr. Chandler L. Walker, in performing experiments in neuroscience and neurodegeneration/regeneration with expertise in various basic and specific laboratory procedures and techniques.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Take care of mouse colonies, including keeping record of the mice, breeding, genotyping, performing injections, surgery, and participate in tissue collection from animals.
• Perform in vitro testing including western blotting, real time RT-PCR, ELISA.
• Perform immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, microscopy.
• General lab maintenance.
• Assist with cell/tissue culture, including obtaining primary neural and glial cells, thawing, expanding and freezing cell lines and obtaining protein and RNA from cells and tissues, transfections and transduction of genes into cultured cells.
• Request quotes and place orders, maintenance of laboratory equipment, and maintenance of cell and reagent inventories.
• Keeping laboratory records in a notebook on a daily basis.
• Participate in group meetings and present results.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, or a related science and two years of research experience (can include one year of experience in pursuit of a degree).

Experience in cell/tissue culture, mouse handling, and biochemistry/molecular biology. Ability to work safely around chemicals. Good laboratory practices and an understanding of Standard Operating Procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

One year of research experience in neuroscience research laboratory. Experience in the field of neuroscience.

Working Conditions / Demands

Extended hours of bench laboratory work. Work independently in consultation w/Dr. Walker as well as a team in multi-experiment projects. Ability to set up and perform maintenance of standard and/or specialized apparatus and laboratory equipment. Ability to lift and carry small and large objects. Up-to-date immunizations and annual TB test required.
