About the Department

The Genomics Facility provides access to advanced genomics technologies to University of Chicago researchers. These technologies include Single-Cell Genomics, Spatial Transcriptomics, Next-Generation Sequencing, Micro-arrays, Sanger Sequencing as well as general nucleic acid sample QC and processing. The Facility is well-supported by the Dean's office and fulfills an essential role in the continued academic success of the University of Chicago. The University of Chicago Genomics Facility operates Next Generation Illumina Sequencing equipment (NovaSEQ, NextSEQ and MiSEQ) as well as general nucleic acid QC equipment (Bio-analyzer/Fragment-analyzer and more) to facilitate and advance Genomics research on campus. This position is intended as expert technical support of the Illumina-based NGS data production pipeline.

Job Summary

The job performs routine assignments related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Analyzes possible solutions using standard procedures. Writes articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

This position will perform single cell services as well as micro-array services. Additionally, this position will need to be able to operate the Facility's sample QC equipment.

Responsibilities

(80%) Illumina NGS data production pipeline (bench)

  • Operates, with minimal supervision, the Facility's Illumina sequencers.
  • Operates the QC equipment associated with the Illumina sequencing operation (Bio-and Fragment-analyzer, qubit, qPCR-equipment).
  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.
  • Installs, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.

(20%) Illumina NGS data production pipeline (documentation)
  • Rigorous in keeping records related to the NGS data production pipeline.
  • Update clients on project progress as needed.
  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.
  • Installs, sets up and performs experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Genomics.

Experience:
  • 2 years of experience in a Genomics Facility or similar setting in academia or industry, however all levels of experience will be considered.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to communicate internally with co-workers and externally with Facility clients.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail oriented with strong sense of work ownership.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Working Conditions
  • Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to perform lab-based tasks for an extended period of time.
