The University of Iowa Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) Biomedical Informatics Core is seeking a research IT support consultant who is is primarily responsible for providing direct support, consultation, guidance, and training to users, and to identify technical solutions for both the ICTS and its supported user community of researchers. This position will work with a wide variety of faculty, staff, and students to assist in their research efforts and will require strong communication skills and an understanding of the research process to facilitate technology solutions for research teams. Support the daily operations of the ICTS, and assist with technology planning in an effort to maximize user and organizational effectiveness.

Duties to include but not limited to:

  • Provide IT implementation and maintenance support for a variety of research services and tools.
  • Perform helpdesk functions and direct user support.
  • Troubleshoot assigned applications and customer reported issues.
  • Provide basic and in-depth support to a range of issues for research services and tools.
  • Document troubleshooting efforts and resolutions to ITIL system and knowledge base.
  • Provide basic one-on-one guidance and consultation to users.
  • Translate customer needs to technical teams.
  • Provide basic one-on-one instruction.
  • Provide training utilizing appropriate technology.
  • Provide basic documentation of user support activities/incidents.
  • Update existing documentation of support services.
  • Provide input in the development of new service-level documentation.
  • Assist the Project Manager and Service Manager with the implementation of approved projects, providing project support and services.
  • Assist with maintaining current projects changes and upgrades to systems and tools.
  • May participate in the planning process for developing operating procedures, guidelines, and policies.
ICTS Description: The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) at the University of Iowa was approved by the Iowa Board of Regents in 2007 to support the work of investigators involved in clinical and translational science. Our mission is to accelerate translational science through programs to develop the translational workforce, to promote engagement of community members and other stakeholders, to promote research integration across the lifespan, and to catalyze innovative clinical and translational research. These efforts will lead to the development of novel therapies and healthcare delivery strategies, the integration of translational research and clinical practice, and, ultimately to measurable improvements in the health of Iowa and the nation.

Education Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Informatics, Instructional Technology, Information Science, Health Care related degree, or other related degree or an equivalent combination of education and related experience in information technology support or healthcare may also serve to meet these minimum requirements.

Experience Requirements
  • Experience, typically 1-3 years providing information technology support.
  • Experience with requirements elicitation and documentation for projects and initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; the ability to communicate effectively technical concepts to a diverse community of technical and non-technical faculty, staff and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a systematic troubleshooting approach to identify and resolve technical problems.
  • Experience developing and maintaining reference documents for both external use (customers/clients) and internal use (knowledge management).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team and independently.
  • Experience working on cross-functional teams.
Highly Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience with databases, healthcare data, research data collection, or electronical medical record data.
  • Experience developing electronic data capture forms or surveys.
  • Experience with medical coding and medical terminology.
  • Experience of query logic.
  • Experience with JavaScript, jQuery, and PHP.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience supporting information technology in a higher educational setting, healthcare or research environment.
  • Understanding of HIPAA, FERPA and FISMA.
  • Understanding of ITIL.
  • Experience with Project Management fundamentals.
