The Department of Neuroscience is seeking a highly motivated candidate with a strong background in neurophysiology and behavioral neuroscience for a Research Assistant Professor, non-tenure position, within the Rodent Behavior Core at the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center.  

The Research Assistant Professor will be responsible for performing and managing scientific research projects in accordance with internally and externally funded awards and contracts. This includes but is not limited to research planning, experimental design and execution, project management on one or more projects, research team meetings; writing and presenting research/study status reports for review and use by the principal investigator(s); writing manuscripts for publication; and identifying and assisting with the acquisition of funding from public, private, and governmental sources. As part of a core facility, additional responsibilities include equipment maintenance, equipment scheduling, and training and supervising trainees and other researchers working on research projects using the equipment and associated techniques.

Qualifications

Eligible candidates must hold an earned doctoral degree in Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Physiology, Pharmacology or related disciplines at the time of appointment. Expertise in neurophysiology and optogenetics, combined with viral-based approaches to deconstruct and manipulate neuronal circuits ex-vivo and in-vivo is a mandatory prerequisite. Previous experience with optogenetics and neuronal imaging in-vivo (fiber photometry) in freely behaving mice, together with expertise appropriate for the analysis of neuronal activity, will be highly valued. Candidates should have minimum of 2 years of post-doctoral or professional experience.

Research activity in our group aims to decrease morbidity and mortality related to stroke and traumatic brain injury through improved understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms after brain injury. We are committed to supporting high-quality foundational and translational research addressing the modifiable risk factors, biomarkers, mechanisms, preventative strategies, acute and chronic treatments and rehabilitation of stroke and recovery from stroke and traumatic brain injury. The successful applicant will be working on collaborative and multidisciplinary research projects to apply neurophysiological, optogenetic and chemogenetic approaches, together with state-of-the art imaging techniques to monitor neuromodulatory signals in freely behaving mice during recovery from brain injury.
