The Research Assistant (RA) is responsible for coordinating human clinical research activities for NIH-funded research projects involving participants recruited from several clinics within Brigham and Women's Hospital. The candidate will work closely with the Principal Investigator (BWH Emergency Medicine Attending Physician) and a supervisor while working with an interdisciplinary team of physician assistants, research nurses, clinicians, and other research staff. He or she will be primarily responsible for the ED GOAL projects (link) which aim to empower patients with serious illness to align their future medical care with their values and goals in the emergency department.

The candidate must comply with all Mass General Brigham regulatory requirements, NIH guidelines, and HIPAA regulations.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Understands the different study protocols within the ED GOAL projects.

- Reviews the electronic medical record to identify potential patients for recruitment.

- Verifies inclusion/exclusion criteria for each study.

- Contacts eligible patients/caregivers via telephone and/or email to gauge interest in the study.

- Administers screening tests for eligibility to the studies, if applicable.

- Schedules and coordinates research visits between participants and study clinicians.

- Assists with study interventions to ensure all study procedures are conducted correctly.

- Works with the investigator and other research staff to create study forms, draft IRB documents, and maintain regulatory binders (on paper and electronically).

- Documents participants' recruitments, adverse events, and protocol deviations.

- Keeps track of participants' and study clinicians' effort in performing study procedures necessary for accurate remuneration.

- Conducts study follow-up calls.

- Maintains an up-to-date participant recruitment record.

- Responds to emails and messages within a reasonable time.

- Seeks guidance immediately whenever unsure about something.

- Performs other duties as assigned or as position requires.

- Expected work hours: 40 hours/week.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

- College degree required (BA/BS/MD).

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

- Ability to work well independently, prioritizing work according to and within established study protocols.

- Excellent interpersonal skills to be able to interact with a variety of people in person and on the telephone.

- Must be able to respectfully build rapport with participants, caregivers, clinicians, physicians/investigators, and other research staff.

- Strong team player and can communicate well within an interdisciplinary team in a fast-paced and demanding environment.

- High level of organization skills with strong attention to detail.

- Ability to follow directions and protocol requirements.

- Possess well-developed computer skills.

- Respect the strict confidentiality of medical records and study data.

- Ability to do remote work as necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

You will be working in a large, newly renovated, Level 1 Trauma Center emergency department at Brigham and Women's Hospital- a Harvard-affiliated teaching hospital. Also, research assistants frequently follow patients into the hospital and may collect research samples or data on hospital wards and intensive care units. The work also involves paper or electronic chart review and data entry.
