Job Summary
The RN Residency Program is designed for newly and soon to be graduated RNs who have graduated on or after October 2019 with an ASN/ADN or higher level degree of nursing education. If you meet these requirements, when prompted please answer "yes" to questions regarding graduation dates and degrees. The application deadline is July 30, 2021. Interviews will be held in August. The program starts with Orientation on October 25, 2021.
Candidates selected for the RN Residency Program will be classified as a Clinical Nurse 1 and must have less than six months of RN employment experience at the time of the program start date. You will be expected to commit to at least two years of full-time employment on the hiring unit after the completion of training. All applicants must have an active CA RN license by September 25, 2021.
- Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care
- Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams
- Carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required
- Performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision
- Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team
- The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required

Required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's of Science in Nursing or Master's of Science in Nursing
- Focused residency, internship, capstone in an acute care medical center oncology, palliative and/or end of life care unit
- Completion of a post-graduate voluntary or paid nursing internship
- Current member of a professional nursing organization (e.g. California Student Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, etc.)
- Participation in an ongoing volunteer activity within the last year
License/CertificationActive Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California Active American Heart Association CPR Certification

Department DescriptionThe Adult Medicine Unit is a 34 bed inpatient medical unit that provides care for patients ranging from young adults to the elderly presenting with a wide variety of diagnoses. The unit has the ability to admit patients requiring telemetry and/or continuous pulse oximetry.
Patients found on this unit are often admitted for acute exacerbations of complex chronic conditions with a focus on pulmonary, gastrointestinal, medical-psychological, and endocrine conditions. Patients can be admitted for diagnostic work-ups, treatment of infectious disease processes, palliative care and end of life care. In addition, this unit administers chemotherapy to treat solid tumor patients admitted to the hospital with an emphasis on treating sarcoma patients.
This unit is home to an innovative palliative care service with trained staff and multidisciplinary resources. There are two dedicated Comfort Care Suites for terminally-ill patients where a low-tech, high comfort environment is provided. These suites provide accommodations for family and friends to remain with patients around the clock. Cultural traditions around dying are actively supported.
The nurse plays an integral role in the Palliative Care team which includes Attending physicians, fellows, residents, medical students, social workers and chaplain services.
In addition to Palliative Care, nurses on this unit attend 16 hours of End-of-Life Care education and complete Oncology Nursing Society Chemotherapy Certification after approximately 6 months to a year on the unit.
Medicine nurses exemplify teamwork in this fast-paced unit. They participate daily in multidisciplinary rounds which include nursing, attending physicians, case managers, social worker, pharmacists, nutrition and rehabilitation services.
