Position Summary

Student Health Services offers primary medical care and health promotion to students of San Diego State University through a wide range of programs and services. Care is provided by board certified physicians, certified nurse practitioners and other medical staff including nurses, clinical laboratory scientists, x-ray technologists, medical assistants, and pharmacists. In addition to the basic medical care, Student Health Services offers health education, orthopedics, osteopathic manipulative treatment and psychiatry.

The Registered Nurse II provides standard nursing care duties, following established procedures and protocols that require observing, interpreting, recording and reporting patients' symptoms, reactions and behaviors. The incumbent works with Physicians and Nurse Practitioners in determining patient needs, planning and modifying nursing care, and applying nursing treatments. The incumbent will exercise independent judgment as allowed within SHS policies and procedures and within their scope of practice, as defined by the Medical Board of California.

The Registered Nurse will assist in the development and implementation of nursing and departmental policies and procedures, services, and committee work.

Hourly-intermittent position anticipated to end on or before June 30, 2023, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Work schedule to be arranged based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. Additionally, one year of professional nursing experience which has provided evidence of the ability to work independently in specialized nursing activities and to support the overall nursing program within the Student Health Center; or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Licenses and/or Certifications Required

Possess and maintain a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California and certification in CPR/AED.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One-year professional nursing experience using protocols for triaging patients by telephone.
  • One-year professional nursing experience in splinting and/or casting.
  • One-year professional nursing experience administering adult immunizations.
  • One-year professional nursing experience working in an ambulatory health clinic setting.
  • One-year professional nursing experience working in a university student health center.
  • Two years of professional nursing specialty experience in urgent care or emergency room.
  • Two years of professional nursing experience in an ambulatory setting with increasing clinical responsibility and independent practice such as in a nurse clinic.
  • Possess patient teaching skills for common college health problems such as, but not limited to, self-care education of common ailments, nutrition counseling, diabetes and asthma counseling smoking cessation counseling, STD prevention, and substance abuse.

Specialized Skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting with good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform triage and handle emergent and/or potentially critical situations with speed, accuracy and diplomacy.
  • Skills required to administer intravenous therapy, therapeutic injections, and nebulizer use; managing minor trauma including wound care, burn care and suture removal; performing ECGs and basic physical assessment.
  • Computer skills in both practice management and electronic health records.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources. Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $33.44 per hour.

This salary range is inclusive of the CSU/CSUEU collective bargaining agreement (CBA) provision that per diem employees hired on an hourly/intermittent basis receive an additional 29% above the regular hourly base rate.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $19.92 - $84.86 per hour.

SDSU COVID-19 Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. Individuals are considered fully vaccinated for five months after their final dose of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine or for two months after receiving the only dose of a single-dose vaccine. Afterward, a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university's secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU's COVID-19 testing program.
