Eskenazi Health serves as the public hospital division of the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 327-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus as well as at 10 Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary

The Radiology Patient Service Assistant performs a variety of clerical and patient service duties necessary to maintain efficient flow of operations within the Radiology department. This includes administrative responsibilities such as answering phone lines, transporting patients and managing documents, in addition to utilizing Epic and PAC's and tracking radiology films and images. The Radiology Patient Service Assistant maintains a high level of customer service at all times.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach, and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County; models Eskenazi Health's values
  • Serves as the first contact patients have with the system and utilizes appropriate customer service skills; greets patients and assists with appropriate forms; monitors front office area to ensure patients and visitors are appropriately served
  • Answers multiple phone lines within company guidelines; schedules appointments; routes callers to appropriate destination, answers questions; thoroughly and accurately completes the telephone triage form and routes to appropriate staff
  • Completes appropriate requisitions and assists in researching missing critical information
  • Transports patients to the appropriate areas as needed
  • Schedules all Imaging Services procedures and any related exams; verifies patient information; performs data entry when scheduling patient appointments
  • Copies/scans documents into Epic; prepares patient orders in Epic and consents
  • Recognizes and responds to signs of patients in emergent distress and directs to appropriate clinical staff
  • Effectively communicates with technical staff regarding wait times
  • Files, tracks, copies, and retrieves radiology films, images and other related records according to established procedures
  • Uploads images and documents via Powershare and PACS; copies images from PACS to DVDs
  • Orders and tracks exams in Epic for comparisons and interpretations
  • Responsible for the documentation of image release information
  • Alters activities and behaviors to reflect and ensure adequate service appropriate to the age of patients served (i.e. pediatric, adolescent, and adult) as described in the area/unit age-specific and/or job-specific competencies

Job Requirements

Six (6) months of clerical experience in hospital or health care setting preferred.High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Data entry experience required
  • Previous customer service experience preferred
  • Must pass multiple computer system application exams

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of standard office procedures and practices, and departmental processes
  • Strong computer knowledge and skills with proficient keyboarding abilities; ability to operate standard office equipment
  • Knowledge of Epic and PACS, basic computer applications and computerized scanning of documents; ability to use multiple computer system applications
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure of high patient volume, multi-task, communicate tactfully and pleasantly with public and all levels of personnel, follow oral and written instructions, and provide excellent customer service
  • Knowledge of acceptable customer relations standards and behaviors
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with patients in a manner consistent with the patient's age and developmental stage; ability to use age-appropriate communications skills
  • Ability to interact with patients from all economic, educational, social, etc. backgrounds; ability to treat all patients with dignity and respect
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with others
  • Ability to display competency in use of all associated equipment needed to perform job duties
  • Ability to demonstrate a positive demeanor, excellent customer service skills, and good oral/written communication skills with the ability to use age-appropriate communications and be professional in both appearance and approach
  • Must be detail-oriented, possess basic mathematical skills, and have analytical skills to resolve issues as they relate to multiple groups including third party vendors, physicians, patients, and the system
  • Ability to prioritize work to ensure it is completed in a timely manner, and be flexible to changing work duties and priorities
