Description
RECOGNIZING INCREASED SKILLS IN EDUCATION" (RISE) is a grant-funded AmeriCorps Program, requiring a one-year commitment from the AmeriCorps member to serve between the dates of August 1, 2021 and July 31, 2022. Full time members are required to serve 1700 hours. AmeriCorps members may serve more than one service year, not to exceed four service years. AmeriCorps members serving in the RISE Program, titled "RISE Program Specialists", facilitate a skill-based curriculum in a group setting, to adjudicated youth, ages 12-18, focusing on educational skill development. However, AmeriCorps members may also be requested to serve youth on an individual basis, specific to the youth needs. As skill development takes time, there will be additional support provided to youth 3 to 6 months after completion of the curriculum.

Benefits AmeriCorps members are not considered state employees and will not receive benefits as do other state employees. Members are eligible to receive the following benefits:

  • A monthly living stipend of $1,733 for full-time members. The living stipend is not considered a salary or wage per AmeriCorps federal regulations. members are not considered state employees and will not receive benefits as do other state employees.
  • Segal Education Award: Upon successful completion of the Member's term of National Service, the Member will receive an education award from the National Service Trust in the amount of $6,345. The award can be used to pay for college or vocational school, to pay back qualified student loans, or in some cases can be transferred to children or grandchildren.
  • Health Insurance: All full-time AmeriCorps Members are eligible to receive health insurance at no cost to the Member.
  • Child-Care Assistance: Full-time Members may receive a childcare subsidy while they participate in national service.
  • Student Loan Forbearance and Payment of Interest Accrued on Qualified Student Loans: Members may be eligible to have the repayment of their qualified student loans postponed while serving (loan forbearance). Upon successful completion of a term of service the National Service Trust will pay, on behalf of the borrower, all or a portion of the interest that accrued on a qualified student loan during the Member's term of service.

Examples of Work
The AmeriCorps member primarily focuses on teaching youth educational based skills, such as goal setting, motivation, organization, study skills and test taking strategies with the assistance of a pre-written curriculum. Groups are held in either the school, probation office, or other community site. AmeriCorps members are also responsible for collecting and submitting data variables relating to school attendance for grant defined performance measures. AmeriCorps members will be required to attend and participate in AmeriCorps national service events and specific Nebraska Probation trainings. AmeriCorps members will also have opportunities to participate in additional trainings throughout their service year for professional development purposes (i.e. juvenile justice/education related conferences and various webinars related to service activities).
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be a U.S Citizen or a permanent resident.
  • AmeriCorps members must submit to a criminal background check that includes FBI Fingerprinting, National Record Check, National Sex Offender Registry and State Criminal Background Check.
AmeriCorps members are encouraged to have completed 48 hours of college coursework from an accredited college in social sciences, criminal justice, education or other related fields, which can be substituted with related work experience. Bachelor's degree in social sciences, criminal justice, education or related fields preferred. The ability to speak Spanish is desired, but not required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Read and write proficiently in English. Communicate effectively in both verbal and written correspondence with all fellow AmeriCorps members, Nebraska State Probation staff, school officials, and community stakeholders. Possess basic computer skills and accurate record keeping abilities. Be able to serve up to 40 hours per week, exhibiting a strong work ethic and passion for volunteerism, with consistent attendance and dependability.
