The PMHNP filling this new role will work Monday through Friday (8a-5p) with members of our Cobb Psychiatry team to provide care to patients in the following settings: • Emergency Department• Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit• Inpatient Acute Care
Qualifications
The psychiatric nurse practitioner will help deliver an integrated behavioral health care model, working collaboratively with our team of psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners on the inpatient behavioral health and consultation-liaison (C/L) services. Approximately 50-60% of the PMHNP's time will be allocated to addressing the needs of the Wellstar Cobb Emergency Department. In this setting, (s)he will offer consultations to determine the appropriate care for patients presenting with psychiatric and substance use disorders. (S)he will work with ED Medical Staff and Behavioral Health Resource Team members (e.g., Masters-level therapists and case managers) to make determinations regarding the need to execute or rescind involuntary holds, to initiate pharmacological treatments in the ED, and/or to recommend other treatment, as necessary. The PMHNP will help in efforts to reduce length of stay in the ED and to facilitate transition of patients to the appropriate level of care. Collaboration of the nurse practitioner with physician leads on the inpatient behavioral health unit is imperative. WellstarCobb's inpatient Behavioral Health Unit is a 32-bed general adult psychiatric unit, serving a moderate-to-high acuity patient population. Patients admitted to the Cobb unit are adults ages 18 and above with psychiatric, substance use, and dual diagnosis disorders. Responsibilities of the nurse practitioner include attending daily treatment team meetings with inpatient unit staff and supporting behavioral health unit needs. On the behavioral health unit, the provider will help develop treatment plans, issue admission and discharge orders, prescribe medications, and work with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure the highest quality and safest care for our patients. (S)he should possess baseline knowledge regarding appropriate medical clearance with psychiatric patients needing inpatient admission. Approximately 25-30% of the provider's time will be allocated to working in this setting. The provider's remaining time will be allocated to supporting Cobb's C/L Psychiatry service. In this setting, (s)he will see patients admitted into the hospital with acute medical and co-occurring psychiatric or substance-related conditions. The C/L psychiatry team works collaboratively with other members of the medical staff and the behavioral health team (e.g. masters-level behavioral health therapists), providing pharmacological and capacity consultations to patients with various clinical presentations (e.g. delirium).
