Job Summary

This position is considered an advanced technical position for professional environmental work. Employee will not be supervised on virtually any aspects of an environmental project assignment. Employee will be required to design investigate, collect, and analyze in depth, field data in an organized and concise manner, consistent with and prepare standard operating procedures and work plans. Supervision of subcontractors and preparation of contract documents will be required. Overnight travel and occasional field work required of employees in this position.

Employee will exercise virtually complete independent judgment in day to day responsibilities. May be assisted by, and supervise other departmental staff, aides, or technicians in the field as well as direct other disciplines in the office. Detailed report preparation ability is required (preparation of reports and proposals), and interaction with client on-site and in management meetings will be common. Participation in negotiations and/or meetings with the regulatory community is anticipated and will also be common.

Budget development and proposal preparation for tasks and complex projects are anticipated.

Additional duties as requested by supervisors from time to time may also be required. Marketing responsibilities will be extensive (generating new opportunities) and some (more than annually) public speaking or authorship of professional papers is expected.

Summary of Essential Job Functions

Must be able to independently collect and synthesize geologic data in the field. Must be able to design and direct work scopes and investigative plans and be able to prepare and create highly original project documents to improve field protocols. Must have a thorough understanding of environmental principles and their application to field circumstances and report to supervisors as well as execute and develop work plans for specific project sites. Must have familiarity with all field equipment used by field scientists and be able to independently select appropriate technologies and equipment for field applications.

Must be able to use a variety of office equipment, such as computers, fax machines, photocopiers, scanners, and videoconferencing and telephone systems. Employee often uses computers to do tasks such as: create spreadsheets; compose correspondence; manage databases; and create presentations, reports, and documents using desktop software and digital graphics.

Must be able to select and deploy field equipment such as depth to water meters, free product detection tools, soil and groundwater sampling equipment. Will be required to give field direction and is anticipated to develop solutions to encountered field problems with little supervisor/project manager guidance required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of a B.Sc./B.A. in geology or an allied science from an accredited college or university;
  • Ten years of experience in environmental geologic consulting;
  • Professional License and/or Certification (PE, PG) is required;
  • Able to read, write, speak and comprehend the English language;
  • OSHA 1910.120 training is current;
  • Capable of executing physical demands associated with typical environmental field duties as verified through an annual physical examination.
  • A working knowledge of Virginia environmental regulations.
Other Abilities Required

Discretion, good judgment, and the ability to work independently are especially important for this position. Must exercise considerable care in developing various project control documents.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

A demonstrated ability to manage employees in a team environment is critical.
