Position Overview

The DAI seeks a mid-level to senior professional with hands-on climate mitigation, adaptation finance, and investment experience in developing countries, including a high level of familiarity related to private or public/private investment (i.e. blended finance) as well as experience in environmental, social and governance (ESG) finance, climate finance, and/or carbon markets. The Principal/Senior Principal Investment Specialist will be responsible for leading and supporting new business efforts, implementing technical solutions, and supporting program implementation. The Principal/Senior Principal Investment Specialist will track best practices and deploy innovative mechanisms for equitable and inclusive climate finance design, ensuring projects achieve additionality and do no harm. The Principal/Senior Principal Investment Specialist will collaborate with other specialists across USG sectors and regions and other client facing business units, including DAI Capital, to improve DAI's competitiveness. The Principal/Senior Principal Specialist will serve as a USG focal point on green and climate finance, building and maintaining an internal network of corporate and project staff engaged in investment-related activities and positioning DAI as a trusted implementer of green and climate finance projects. As part of this role, the Principal/Senior Principal Investment Specialist will identify or develop internal and external technical resources, tools, and experts to ensure that DAI is capturing and sharing the breadth and depth of its knowledge across the organization. The Principal/Senior Principal Investment Specialist will be an integral part of the Economic Growth Sector, participating in regular bi-weekly meetings and organized events, and will support climate integration across USG in collaboration with the Environment Sector.

This is a full-time position.

Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Work with the USG sector as a whole to set and achieve new business targets based on market knowledge and intelligence gained from interactions with DAI's project teams, our USG clients and available information.
  • Support or lead new business efforts with a climate finance and investment focus or components, conducting remote or in-country reconnaissance prior to USG solicitations, responding to requests for information from the client, developing a technical approach in response to a solicitation, identifying and negotiating with partners for implementation or proposed projects, drafting technical content for winning proposals, and providing constructive feedback through the review of technical content developed by others. This will include not only projects specifically related to climate finance, but also supporting proposals efforts with an investment component in other areas such as environment, competitiveness, trade and export promotion, agriculture, health, water, and sanitation.
Program Implementation
  • Act as Technical Advisor and internal focal point for a set of assigned projects, organizing technical support and promoting innovation to USAID and other donor-funded projects being carried out by DAI teams worldwide.
  • Support delivery of investment activities of DAI projects by providing specialized technical assistance that advances blended finance, including green and climate finance.
  • Directly supports current project teams to identify, adapt, and refine approaches and in facilitating financial investments that provide cost effective solutions to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and support climate adaptation.
  • Direct support DAI projects with the development and quality control of deliverables.
Competitive Positioning
  • Build and manage DAI's internal network of staff engaged in climate and green finance-related activities, working with them to capture, share, and promote DAI's investment expertise through internal and external webinars, panels, or conferences.
  • Expand and maintain USG's climate investment-related partnership network for purposes of potential business development opportunities, ongoing project assistance, and shared learning.
  • Draft technical notes, blogs, or other communications that help establish DAI's reputation as a thought leader in the international community on investment, including transaction facilitation, investment facility design, blended finance, investment promotion and blended finance arrangements.
  • Keep abreast of new initiatives, innovations or efforts of development organizations and international financial institutions in attracting capital into development sectors and climate-related investments, including impact investing and blended finance.
Additional responsibilities as deemed necessary.

Qualifications & Skills

Minimum Requirements:
  • Grade 7: Minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience in the economic growth and a college degree. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Grade 8: Minimum of 9 years of relevant professional experience in the economic growth and a college degree. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Relevant professional experience is work experience with an investment firm, fund, international finance institution or consulting firm engaged in emerging markets, working in one or more of the following: capital advisory, transaction advisory and investment or fund structuring, green or climate finance, or direct investing.
  • Experience working with development institutions and international financial institutions; preferably some experience with USAID or the U.S. Development Finance Corporation.
  • Experience designing funding proposals for climate mitigation and adaptation (i.e. Global Environment Facility, Green Climate Fund, Adaptation Fund, World Bank Climate Investment Funds, carbon markets, disaster risk finance, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and lead teams for winning new business and clients.
  • Ability to take on both leadership and support roles in the development of plans, proposals, and in carrying out work.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate information clearly and tailor communication to diverse audiences, and experience writing strong proposals and pitches for clients, preferably including development institutions and international financial institutions.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence with empathy and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams, create inclusive work environments, and work effectively within a culturally diverse environment.
  • Able and willing to travel to any country where DAI currently operates or may wish to operate barring times when DAI Global Security has deemed travel unsafe.
  • Able and willing to adjust work schedule, if needed, to support teams located in different time zones/countries.
Authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred, but not required:
  • Experience supporting project finance for carbon markets, nature-based solutions, blue carbon, climate adaptation, climate smart agriculture, clean energy, circular economy, and/or disaster risk management.
  • Familiarity with climate risk disclosure standards, net-zero partnerships, and green investment frameworks for financial institutions.
  • Professional working proficiency in a second language (Spanish, French, Russian, or Arabic preferred).
  • Experience working in least developed or conflict and fragile states preferred.
Compensation & Benefits:

For regular positions (includes US based LTTA)

At grade P7: For employees working the United States, the full-time equivalent annual base salary for this position is expected to be between $116,288 to $143,003.

At grade P8: For employees working the United States, the full-time equivalent annual base salary for this position is expected to be between $130,117 to $159,032.

Salary for part-time employees will be prorated based on actual hours worked. Actual offers will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, qualifications, relevant education, experience, skills, seniority, performance, and business or organizational needs.

Eligible U.S. based employees, will be able to enroll in medical, dental and vision insurance, plus a 401(k)-retirement plan with a company match. Additionally, employees will be eligible for company-paid annual leave (vacation & holidays), sick leave, parental leave; as well as short- and long-term disability coverage. Detailed information will be provided at the time a formal offer is extended.
