General Summary Overview Statement

This position is days Wednesday - Saturday.

Under general supervision, plumbing includes the work and or practice, materials, fixtures used in the installation, removal, maintenance, extension and alteration of a plumbing system throughout the hospital facilities and its satellites. Installs, removes, services and make repairs to steam supply lines, condensate return lines, steam traps and steam operated equipment in hospital owned facilities. A strong knowledge of all piping fixtures, fixed appliances and appurtenances in connection with all sanitary drainage, storm drainage, special wastes, and their venting systems.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Responds to emergency and trouble calls throughout the hospital & its satellites.

2. Installs and repairs plumbing throughout the campus including, but not limited piping valves, faucets, plumbing fixtures, drains, steam piping, steam pressure reducing valves, steam traps, hospital main pressure reducing steam trains, and the steam condensate return system.

3. May perform functions of a steamfitter and sprinkler-fitter.

4. Must also be proficient in the assembly and installation of different plumbing materials such as but not limited to iron, steel, glass, copper, plastic.

5. Must be able to soft solder, silver solder and caulk joints.

6. Must be knowledgeable of threading and roll/press grooving tools.

7. Must be able to maintain oxygen, vacuum and medical air systems.

8. Complete daily record of work completed on I-Pad

9. a) Subject to a call in anytime for emergencies. b) Respond to problems of all trades during off shift hours as required.

10. Ability to maintain wastewater treatment systems.

11. Regularly directs the work of plumber's assistant or apprentice.

12. Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Qualifications

  • . Completion of a five-year apprenticeship program in plumbing; five years of formal plumbing training as well as in steam fitting.

    2. Licensed as a journeyman plumber in Massachusetts.

    3. Five years experience as a licensed journeyman plumber with a strong industrial background.

    4. Experience with wastewater treatment systems.


  • Skills and Abilities

  • a) Ability to read and follow blueprints (b) knowledge of Massachusetts plumbing codes.
  • Knowledge of general plumbing principles in order to troubleshoot the Hospital's plumbing system in response to emergency and routine problems.
  • a) Ability to coordinate work with other departments, b) available to work overtime, c) and ability to provide own hand tools.
  • Understanding of the principles of steam distribution systems.
  • Occasionally (less than 15% of the time) must exert effort to lift over seventy pounds.


  • Working Conditions

  • Compliance with the Hospital and department rules on uniforms in addition to the Buildings & Grounds policy and procedure manual.
  • Exposure to hot and cold water, noxious odors, gases, dampness, heat and cold, and raw sewage.
  • Subject to hazards from power tools, heat and eye strain from torches. However, observance of safety procedures minimizes risks.
  • The use of safety equipment such as: respirators, safety glasses, safety shoes, etc. on specific job assignments.
  • a) Pass respirator clearance exam, b) along with compliance with Hospital's universal precaution rules.
  • Understand and practice patient confidentiality (HIPPA)
  • Understand and practice infection control through proper dust containment. Understand the use of the environmental containment booths.
  • Is subject to call any time for emergencies due to inclement weather, special project or plant failure.
