General Overview

Reporting to the Office of the General Counsel's in-house collections attorney, the Paralegal supports the Collections Department in the Office of the General Counsel.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Issues liens for Mass General Brigham affiliated institutions, which includes printing patient bills, drafting, filing, and mailing liens to patients and their attorneys;
• Reviews all referred accounts for potential insurance coverage, contacts patients' attorneys or patients to obtain automobile, workers compensation insurance information or any other coverage available, then notify in writing the appropriate Mass General Brigham affiliates to ensure proper billing;
• Contacts patients' attorneys to request updates regarding status of lawsuits;
• Contacts patients and their attorneys regarding unpaid accounts;
• Handles inquiries from patients and attorneys regarding billing information, which involves providing billing and medical record information;
• Assists Mass General Brigham Revenue Cycle Operations personnel in reviewing and resolving disputed insurance denials or delays on patient accounts;
• Assists with patient complaints;
• Maintains and schedules the OGC Collections attorney's calendar;
• The position requires working closely with staff from Mass General Brigham Finance along with the Admitting Departments, Case Management, Patient Financial Services, Social Services at the following Mass General Brigham affiliated corporations: Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Salem Hospital, Newton Wellesley Hospital, Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital, Nantucket Cottage Hospital, Wentworth Douglas Hospital, Cooley Dickenson Hospital and the Spaulding hospitals and nursing facility.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
Associate's or Bachelor's Degree required
Two to three years of related experience, preferably in a medical billing setting
Experience with EPIC and familiarity with Mass General Brigham systems preferred

Skills, Abilities and Competencies
• Excellent written skills and the ability to correspond and communicate with others clearly and effectively in writing. May respond directly on behalf of attorney or manager without direction or instruction
• Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills and the ability to interpret information, answer complex questions and communicate in a professional, courteous, clear and concise manner
• Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, including Outlook's calendaring functions
• Attention to detail and accuracy in work
• Superb organizational skills
• Strong work ethic
• Enjoys working as a member of a team
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at the same time
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
