The Packaging Engineer position will provide creative, technical, and project support in planning, development, coordinating, communicating, and executing new packaging development/improvement projects for all new seasonal, fast track, and promotional events. This role has an understanding of the development and manufacturing process in order to be able to collect pertinent information for the creation and revision of packaging, supporting both new and existing products for HbI.

Responsibilities

  • With marketing's direction, design a functional, cost efficient package that will fit within current manufacturing and market scenarios. Create the structural dieline and supply that layout to the agency (of marketing's choosing) for development of mechanical art.
  • Draft garment folding and package execution instructions for manufacturing plant personnel and inclusion in style adoption.
  • Identify new packaging items that require a new part number and get these assigned.
  • Coordinate with marketing so that packaging material is effective for graphic treatment intended and make recommendations to marketing and agencies if necessary to drive production innovation.
  • Coordinate development and production with vendors for new structures that fill a niche where a packaging style may not already exist.
  • Conduct testing with manufacturing for new packaging structures.
  • Proof structure and art prior to production.
  • Attend press proofs to set color, production standards, and tolerance on first runs (when applicable).
  • Supply manufacturing folded samples prior to the first production.
  • Ensure current packaging will be sufficient for any product/garment change or improvement. If the current package structure will not accommodate the garment revision, then recommendations will be provided and changes implemented to update package to manage and communicate new garment feature
  • Provide technical and project management support in planning, coordinating, communicating, and executing new packaging development/improvement projects along with the responsibility for ensuring the timely and efficient execution of packaging development/improvement projects.
  • Work cross-functionally with internal and external contacts.
  • Package development through data acquisition, artwork creation/ revision, accuracy validation, part number assignment, mechanical hand off, approval, specification, and communication to the organization to meet HbI, customer, and consumer requirements.
  • Develop and maintain Packaging mechanicals/ specifications/ templates in HbIs online art management system insuring that art for hand off to vendors for proof/ approval and subsequent vendor proofs meet HbI's requirements.
  • Color, dimension, and layout approvals for packaging material proofs.
  • Support packaging and label process standardization projects.
  • Support packaging requests with package mock ups, and conceptual art for new packaging structures and innovation projects.
  • Update re-packaging service by identifying any new styles in his/her respective brands that need to be added to the service list and styles that need to be removed or updated.

Qualifications
  • Required Education/Certification: BA / BS degree required, preferably in Packaging/ Graphic Design, Business, or other related degree
  • Preferred Education/Certification: Master's Degree in business analytics, data management, data analytics, supply chain, engineering, business, operations, or a related field.
  • Required Years of Experience: 5 to 10 years of packaging-related experience in project management (textile/apparel packaging development & manufacturing).
  • Preferred Years of Experience: 1-3 years of relevant supply planning experience.
  • This position requires computer graphic proficiency, an excellent sense of color and the ability to translate concepts into product design
  • Must possess the technical skills necessary to create product ready artwork and mechanicals
  • PC proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.) required
  • Experience in Adobe Illustrator (Photoshop a plus)
  • Printing production, pre-press experience preferred
  • Bilingual preferred
  • Limited domestic/ international travel required
  • Superior organizational, communication, consensus-building and sense of task urgency skills required
