General Summary / Overview Statement

Brigham and Women's Outpatient Pharmacy is a large pharmacy that serves its community along with patients being discharged home. This role is responsible for focusing on providing high quality patient care while supporting patient prescription needs. The pharmacy is expanding services and looking to hire energetic individuals looking to make a difference in patient outcomes.

The primary location for work will be in Boston, MA. Training (2-4 weeks approximately). Established work hours, M-F within the pharmacy open hours of 7 am - 7 pm along with a set rotating weekend.

Under the direction of a staff pharmacist and/or pharmacy leadership team, follow established policies and procedures to perform a variety of routine technical and clerical support tasks that are integral to the operation of the pharmacy department. Tasks include, but are not limited to, preparation and distribution of patient specific medications, outpatient prescriptions, stock orders and prescription deliveries.

These tasks are designed to assist the pharmacist in the preparation and delivery of pharmaceutical supplies and medications in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and other regulatory agencies as applicable. Most tasks require the review and authorization of a licensed pharmacist.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Staffing and Competency
  • Perform medication deliveries and distribute medications to patient care areas.
  • Perform all required pharmaceutical dosage calculations necessary to prepare extemporaneous dosage forms as applicable under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Return unused medications and perform medication expiration date checking as assigned.
  • Fill prescriptions and type labels for ambulatory and discharge prescriptions for all applicable patient care areas.
  • Manage inventory in all pharmacy areas and automated dispensing cabinets (ADC) and charge stock orders, ADC shrinkage, and patient and clinic requisitions.
  • Provide information and triage phone calls to the appropriate individual within the pharmacy department when answering the phone.
  • Carry out duties and responsibilities as assigned by staff pharmacists or pharmacy leadership.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas.
  • Provides and establishes strong customer service with providers and patients
  • Technology
  • Utilize area-specific technology, including, but not limited to, robotics, automation, software, equipment, barcode scanning and information systems.
  • Answers and manages all incoming phone calls with timeliness to support our quality goals and initiatives.

  • Qualifications
    Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Previous hospital-related experience, formal training, or certification from a pharmacy technician training program desired.
  • Must be a registered Pharmacy Technician with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy
  • Upon departmental orientation and annually thereafter, must complete training, which includes, but is not limited to:
  • Institutional Safety Training
  • Annual Departmental Technician Competency Assessments
  • Must obtain Board Certification as a Pharmacy Technician from a nationally approved technician certification board within one year of employment


  • Skills and Abilities Required
  • Possess command of the English language.
  • Read, interpret, and follow complicated verbal and written instructions with accuracy, precision, and dependability.
  • Work with sustained attention and care on routine, repetitive tasks.
  • Perform the common mathematical calculations associated with preparing non-sterile, extemporaneously manufactured pharmaceutical products and other medication doses.
  • Possess communication skills and a thorough understanding of pharmacy policies and procedures.
  • Perform job duties in a professional and courteous manner and maintain working relationships with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals.
  • Possess time management and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks under time constraints.
  • Organize and maintain efficient work areas and services.
  • Make decisions based on knowledge of procedural requirements in conjunction with specific skills and task related functions.
  • Distinguish routine functions from those requiring a pharmacist's professional judgment.
  • Continuously acquire skills necessary in the operation of pharmacy equipment.
  • Understand basic medical terminology, abbreviations, and computer operations.
  • Always follow all applicable state and federal controlled substance regulations.
  • Must possess the ability to assess patient specific data concerning age-specific needs (neonate, infant, adult, geriatric patients) and provide care as described in departmental policies and procedures.


  • Working Conditions
  • Works under constant time deadlines.
  • Occasionally exposed to infectious disease and to possible carcinogenic, mutagenic, and sensitizing medications.


  • Hospital Wide Responsibilities

    Works within legal, regulatory, accreditation and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by BWH/MGB; follows safe practices required for the position; complies with appropriate BWH and MGB policies and procedures; fulfills any training required by BWH and/or MGB, as appropriate; brings potential matters of non-compliance to the attention of the supervisor or other appropriate hospital staff.
