The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician 1 with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. The Ophthalmic Technician I / Scribe is able to effectively perform appropriate clinical testing and understands the theory, principles and practice of eye care. The duties will include proper documentation/completion in the EMR system, in compliance with department standards.

The core responsibilities of the position are the following:

  • Prepares exam rooms for daily clinical activities.
  • Monitors and maintains the appropriate levels of minor equipment, dry goods, and pharmaceuticals in clinic.
  • Tests patient's far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
  • Examines eye for abnormalities.
  • Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
  • Measures intraocular pressure of eyes.
  • Tests patient's field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and charts test results on graph paper.
  • Measures axial length of eye using ultrasound equipment.
  • Performs other related tests and measurements.
  • Administers placement of hard and soft contact lenses.
  • Documents patients' histories and gives instructions to patients concerning eye care.
  • Performs technical workups and special testing.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Functions:
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends, as necessary.
  • Commitment to the University's core values.

  • May rotate for assignment at a satellite facility.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

The Ophthalmic Technician I Scribe tasks include but are not limited to performing the following for patients of all ages:
  • Ocular History Taking
  • Visual Acuity Assessment
  • Refraction Skills
  • Intraocular Pressure
  • Assist Ophthalmologists
  • Slit Lamp Exam
  • Ocular Motility
  • Pupillary Function
  • Glare Test/PAP/Pachymetry

Under the direction of a physician, transcribe, in real-time, a physician-patient encounter including, but not limited to, the patient's medical history, physician's impression, patient care plan, results of tests, prescriptions, and orders. Document any procedures performed by an Ophthalmologist or Optometrist.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

High School diploma or equivalent

Certification and Licensing

COA certification preferred

Experience:
A minimum (2) years of experience

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office).
