Job Overview:

Oliver Wyman is seeking an experienced Research Manager to join our Financial Services (FS) Research team in New York. The FS Research Team Manager is a member of our global Knowledge Services team and is responsible for ensuring the America's FS practice is supported with high quality research service offering that helps our business succeed in their client execution and business development pursuits. Our Financial Services business partners with the world's leading financial institutions on their most significant challenges to deliver breakthrough impact. They have an unparalleled understanding of the evolving market structures, economics, and strategic and regulatory trends across all segments of the financial services sector. The Research Manager will coordinate secondary research efforts across the FS Americas team to ensure that our service evolves with our internal client's needs. The manager should be able to converse credibly and confidently as a thought partner with all levels. Key Responsibilities:

Research Operations Management

  • Manage a growing team of Financial Services researchers in North America
  • Supervise research workflow to ensure efficiency, high quality, and client impact
  • Use internal KPIs to develop and implement plans for operational improvement
  • Liaise with the Americas Regional Research Manager and peer Research Managers on strategic global projects and to ensure global best practice sharing

Client Management
  • Take the lead in critical discussions between Research Team and Stakeholders including business sector leads and regional market leaders
  • Keep abreast of internal client needs and external sector trends to ensure research services align with OW business priorities
  • Build positive working relationships across the Americas FS practice at both a strategic and transactional level that will allow you to share feedback and identify opportunities for the team to proactively contribute

Staff Management
  • Support team in conducting timely, accurate and cost-effective research that is synthesized for impact
  • Establish and assign goals to team members and evaluate their performance
  • Instill strong team commitment to professional development and the promotion of a continuous learning mindset
  • Responsible for coaching, mentoring, and developing career paths for direct reports
  • Recommend all HC actions for team members including staffing, pay changes, performance evaluations

Budget and Resource Management
  • Recommend items for inclusion in the department's annual operating budget, including human resources and electronic data resource portfolio changes
  • Monitor and keeps departmental expenditures within approved budget

Experience Required
  • Experience managing a team of 5-10 staff members
  • Demonstrated research experience covering financial services in a business setting (7+ years) at a management consultancy, investment bank, asset manager, private equity firm, research specialist provider or financial technology firm preferred
  • Expert level knowledge of key FS research tools such as Bloomberg, S&P Capital IQ Pro, Eikon, Capital IQ or similar research tools/databases

  • Experience leading teams, coaching colleagues, performance management, delivering quality feedback and managing compensation matters
  • Creative and inquisitive with tenacious drive to solve complex research challenges
  • Ability to effectively synthesize research, draw out key insights and provide basic data analysis

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (especially Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
