Department Information

Made up of Certified Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists, Team Physicians, Orthopedic Specialists, Sports Psychologists and Registered Dietitians, the Indiana University Sports Medicine department strives to provide the highest quality medical care to the Indiana University student-athletes through education, prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses. Representing 24 sports here at Indiana University, the Sports Medicine department is committed to providing quality healthcare and treatment in a safe environment to all athletes.

Job Summary

  • Assesses patient and client nutritional and health needs.
  • Counsels patients on nutrition issues and healthy eating habits.
  • Develops meal and nutrition plans, taking both client preference and budget into account.
  • Evaluates the effects of meal plans and change the plans as needed.
  • Promotes better health by speaking to groups about diet, nutrition, and the relationship between good eating habits and preventing or managing specific diseases.
  • Creates educational materials about healthy food choices.
Other department responsibilities:
  • Coordinates and provides body composition measurements.
  • Plans pre-competition recovery for home and away competitions and supplemental education for the Indiana University Athletic Department.
  • Manages student volunteers and coordinates the offsite Nutrition Oasis Fueling Stations by monitoring training table meals, developing education materials, as well as other duties assigned by Senior Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine and Sports Performance Services.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Associate's degree.
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Dietetics.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • Two years of experience working as a nutritionist.
LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS

Preferred
  • Registered Dietician.

Preferred
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of athletic governing bodies: e.g., National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), U. S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), regarding banned drugs and restricted substances.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires sedentary work as well as extended durations of moving about the workplace. It requires the ability to move objects and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds and the ability to discern between various objects and devices. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
