CRITICAL CARE NURSE PRACTITIONER / 36 HOURS / VARIABLE ROTATING / BWH - NEUROSCIENCE ICU, NEUROCRITICAL CARE/ BOSTON

JOB SUMMARY

Working in collaboration with neurointensivists, critical care fellows, and residents, the Neurocritical Care Nurse Practitioner provides high quality patient care to for neurology and neurosurgery patients in the in the Brigham and Women's Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit. The Neurocritical Care NP is a member of the multidisciplinary provider team with patient care and management responsibilities similar to those of the interns and junior residents who have month-long rotations in the Neuroscience ICU.

GENERAL OVERVIEW

The Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse who has acquired specialized knowledge and skills through completion of a nurse practitioner program. The practitioner has the credentials to function in an expanded nursing role and is responsible for the daily management of selected patients. The practitioner has responsibility for assessment and management of patients including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and continuous implementation and evaluation of an appropriate plan of care. The Nurse Practitioner works with her/his collaborating physician in accordance with mutually developed practice guidelines, members of the care team and is responsible to the Nursing Director or Executive Nursing Director for the area for issues specific to the discipline of nursing. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to):

  • Elicits a detailed and accurate history, performs an appropriate physical examination, records and presents the pertinent data to the neurocritical care team.
  • Attends, presents and actively participates in daily ICU rounds.
  • Assists with procedures and pre- and postoperative care.
  • Performs and/or prescribes routine laboratory and related studies, medications, and consultations as appropriate and standard for the Neuroscience ICU Service.
  • Enters and signs admission, transfer, and preoperative orders into Order Entry.
  • Assists in facilitating patient movement/flow through the hospital, particularly as it relates to the admission and discharge process.
  • Serves as a mentor to APP staff in training, students, and house staff, educating others while continuing to learn and expand one's own knowledge base.
  • Continues to provide the highest standard of patient care, while incorporating measures that improving efficiency and cost-effectiveness within the department and hospital.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participates with research projects (generation by others and self-initiated projects).

    Qualifications
    Education:
    • Masters' Degree in Nursing required. Completion of a Master's or post Masters' degree in Adult or Family NP program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).
    • Current Adult/Geriatric or Family Nurse Practitioner Certification by an accredited APRN certifying body required.
    • Valid prescriptive authority from both MA DPH and Federal DEA required.
    • Current APRN License to practice in Massachusetts Required.
    Experience:
    • Previous experience in the care of patients with acute care neurological disease required.
    • Master's degree or Doctorate and a current license to practice as an advanced practice nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
    • Certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner preferred.
    • Minimum of 2 years nurse practitioner experience required.
    • Demonstrated previous experience and expertise in the management and care of stroke, neurology and neurosurgery patients required.
    • Prior neurocritical care nursing or nurse practitioner experience required.
    • BLS, ACLS required; ENLS preferred.
    • Membership and active involvement with professional organizations strongly preferred.
    • Availability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
