We are seeking a full-time Nurse Midwife for Salem Hospital, covering a combination of weekend and weekday shifts.

General Overview

The Certified Nurse Midwife is a professional authorized by the Board of Registration in Nursing to practice Nurse Midwifery. The Nurse Midwife is responsible for safe and personalized care to patients in the antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and routine inpatient GYN settings according to MGB Salem Midwifery Guidelines. The midwifery guidelines are developed within the context of the, MGB Salem Obstetrics and Gynecology Service, and the CRICO Guidelines established for the MGB Salem Obstetrical Service. The Nurse Midwife will provide 12 or 24-hour weekend inpatient L&D, L&D triage and cover a caseload of obstetrical patients, including telephone triage as determined by call group needs. The nurse midwife is responsible to the OBGYN Medical Director and Practice Manager, NSPG.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes responsibility for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation for a plan of care for obstetrical and gynecological patients selected according to approved nurse midwifery guidelines.
  • Collaborates with the health care team in planning and implementing care for obstetrical and gynecological patients.
  • The individual in this position must demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the principals of growth and development with newborn, adolescent and adult patient population.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and revision of nurse midwifery guidelines and standards of care.
  • Evaluates individual health care status of patients, formulates a management plan and revises the plan as indicated.
  • Participates in continuous case review and appropriately communicates current data regarding all patients cared for by the nurse midwifery practice.
  • Issues prescriptions and medication orders in accordance with nurse midwifery practice protocols, and the rules set forth by the Board of Nursing.
  • Documents in a clear, complete, concise and organized manner demonstrating skill in the nursing process.
  • Seeks consultation according to nurse midwifery protocols from all members of the health care team involved in patient's care and makes appropriate referrals.
  • Provides consultation services as required by the health care team.
  • Continues assessment and teaching throughout pregnancy as indicated by documentation.
  • Manages normal labor and conducts delivery, including assessment of maternal and fetal status, identification of deviations from normal, management of third stage, management of episiotomy and perennial repairs as determined by call group needs.
  • Manages maternal postpartum course including teaching, referrals, and follow-up.
  • Identifies, manages and consults for obstetrical emergencies as indicated.
  • Participates in ongoing review of nurse midwifery prescriptive practice.
  • Participates in Quality Management Program on a regular and continuing basis.
  • Demonstrates appropriate collaborative and consultative relationships with other providers within the institution and community.
  • Demonstrates awareness of community resources and assists staff, patients and families to use them effective.
  • Serves on nursing and hospital committees and assumes responsibility for disseminating and communicating information to staff.
  • Participates in orientation of new employees.
  • Acts as a preceptor for members of the staff and students.
  • Presents divisional and organizational continuing education programs.
  • Identifies own learning needs and updates clinical knowledge and skills through formal and informal education and review of current literature.
  • Develops annual objectives and reviews them with the practice manager and/or Medical Director and collaborating physician at time of the performance review and at appropriate intervals. Completes the annual credentialing process through the department's credentialing program.
  • Assists in determining, evaluating, and/or implementing nurse midwifery practice goals and objectives.
  • Maintains interdisciplinary approach for planning and communicating information for appropriate patient care.
  • Maintains awareness of legislation that may affect the health care delivery systems and nurse midwifery practice.
  • Assumes responsibility for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation for a plan of care for obstetrical and gynecological patients selected according to approved nurse midwifery guidelines.


Qualifications
Qualifications
  • Experience:
    • Preferred: One year of experience as Nurse Midwife
  • Education/Degree
    • Required: Graduation from an educational program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery and Education (ACME).
    • Required: Successful completion of the certifying examination by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).
    • Required: Enrollment in the Certification Maintenance Program by the AMCB.
    • Preferred: Masters Degree.
  • Licensure, Certifications, or Registration
    • Required: Authorization to practice as registered nurse in Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Current certification by American College of Nurse Midwives. Authorization to practice in the expanded role in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Registration to issue controlled substances with Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Registration to issue controlled substances with U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
