Job Summary/Basic Function:
Responsible for the configuration, maintenance, integration and deployment of an enterprise backbone network telecommunications system for the Office of Information Technology including but not limited to: network analysis, network design, network security, wireless communications, system design, system analysis, system administration, system improvements, automated system monitoring, 24-hour coverage (best effort), consulting and individualized training. Responsible for the telecommunications infrastructure of Boise State University; to include all Boise State buildings, all campus sites and all cross-connect sites. Responsible for the quality and reliability of telecommunications of Boise State University; to include offering a voice, video and data telecommunications infrastructure that is reliable and available with 99.999% uptime.

This individual must have the ability to determine; time to resolution, possible short-term fixes, prioritize services for the critical needs of the University and implement corrective actions. In addition, this individual communicates to the management of OIT and executive level staff at the University the status of the network and the repairs so that timely decisions by the University may be met. This position would liaison with State Government contacts and with other Idaho university positions to assist with statewide communication support and standards developments.

Network Infrastructure Services provides and supports the network infrastructure that provides data and communication connectivity to the campus community.
Level Scope:
Recognized master in professional discipline with significant impact and influence on campus policy and program development. Establishes critical strategic and operational goals; develops and implements new products, processes, standards or operational plans to achieve strategies. Regularly leads projects of critical importance to the campus; these projects carry substantial consequences of success or failure. Requires significant influence and communication with executive leadership. Problems faced are frequently complex and multidimensional, requiring broad based consideration of variables that impact multiple areas of the organization
Essential Functions:
• Serve as OIT's LAN Engineer.
• Serve as OIT's WAN Engineer.
• Serve as OIT's Wireless Engineer.
• Serve as OIT's Network Security/VPN Engineer.
• Serve as OIT's Optical and Copper backbone Engineer.
• Manage assigned work queue for customer needs. Assist customers with planning their future needs.
• This position requires on-call and after-hours support for maintenance and Service Down scenarios.
• Expert knowledge is required to deal with outside entities - Network Operations Centers (NOC) to respond quickly to outages or issues. Most contacts are through email and telephone.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Requires use/knowledge of Cisco (Routers, Switches, wireless products, load balancers), Microsoft DNS/DHCP services
• Expertise in the design, analysis, optimization and operation of LAN/WAN and Wireless Services.
• Highly skilled in interpersonal relationships, teaching, planning, negotiation, and communication.
• Ability and desire to work collaboratively with a team of network engineers with a high degree of interaction
• Definitive knowledge of all forms of copper wiring and fiber for telecommunications and familiarity with current best practices.
• Ability to use VLF, to troubleshoot/extend fiber paths.
• Ability to troubleshoot all copper media for telecommunication patch panels and outlets.
• Skilled in all seven layers of the OSI model.
• Expert in packet capturing and interpretation.
• Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, communications and public relations skills.
• Expert in using SNMP for Network Management.
• Expert in using Netflow for Baseline and troubleshooting communications.
• Expert in using Network Spans and Taps for troubleshooting/monitoring Traffic.
• In the event of a "network down" situation, Ability to work swiftly to correct all networking problems.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and 8 years of experience or equivalent professional experience. Position requires a current certification registered with Cisco Corporation: Cisco Certified. Or must obtain Cisco certification within one (1) year of hire.
