The mission of the SMU Health Service is to provide quality, caring, cost effective and convenient ambulatory healthcare and health education services in association with other university departments that promote healthy lifestyles and enhance academic productivity leading to satisfying and rewarding college experiences.

About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

Under the supervision of the Director of Counseling Services, the Clinical Case Manager provides mental health referral coordination and follow-up for SMU students who may wish to seek treatment off-campus or whose needs are beyond Counseling Services' scope of care. The Clinical Case Manager develops collaborative relationships with SMU campus partners and Dallas area therapists providers, provides consultation for staff, coordinates medical withdrawals, and assists in providing both crisis intervention and initial consultation screenings. The purpose of this position is to connect students with the resources they need to manage their mental health and enhance the likelihood of personal and academic success. The successful candidate will join a campus community that strives to be deeply supportive and conducive to positive mental health and wellbeing.

Essential Functions:

  • Facilitates off-campus referrals for long-term, specialized/complex care and substance abuse. Tracks, monitors and follows-up on referrals to ensure continuity of care (includes psychiatric hospitalizations). Builds/maintains a strong network of community providers, including openings and low-cost options. Manages referral data and reporting and implements/maintains online referral platform.
  • Develops partnerships with agencies to help students access and utilize needed services. Actively develops and maintains relationships with campus and community resources. Serves as a contact point for external constituents (parents, hospital personnel and other community resources) and liaises with RLSH to coordinate wellness and welfare checks.
  • Provides crisis assessment/intervention and assists staff during business hours in responding to students w/urgent needs. Conducts Initial Consultations, and provides referral consultations. Collaborates w/Eating Concerns Team (Medical & Counseling staff) to identify treatment options & assist with referrals.
  • Assists students with internal procedures related to requesting withdrawals for medical or mental health reasons. Makes contact and follows up with students returning from medical leave to ensure appropriate care/conditions are in place. Posts mental health hospitalization assistance and after care planning - being the contact person between the family and the University.
  • Actively participates in other departmental activities including staff meetings and departmental committees. Assists in outreach programs as needed. Maintains accurate and timely documentation for all referral and clinical interactions.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Master's Degree is required.

Two years' experience providing case management, crisis intervention, counseling, and care coordination to young adults and/or college students is required; 3 years of experience is preferred. Experience working in a university counseling center is preferred.

Candidate must be licensed in Texas as an LMSW, LCSW, LMHC, LMFT, or LPC

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must have knowledge of case management best practices and be able to provide culturally sensitive treatment to a diverse client population.

Candidate ability to collect and report data is essential.

Candidate understanding of the mental healthcare service delivery system is a must.

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with campus personnel, such as professionals in academic affairs and/or student life and a multidisciplinary team of mental health clinicians. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Candidate ability to help clients navigate insurance systems is preferred.

Candidate must have familiarity using an electronic health record.
