GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Under the direction of a registered nurse, the Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting physicians, nurse midwives, nurse practitioners and nurses (thereafter referred to as providers) with evaluation, management, and treatment of patients during office visits and other tasks related to the visit consistent with his / her training and skills. His / her primary roles are to assure efficient patient flow through the office; to maintain neat, clean, and safe patient care areas, and to promote patient satisfaction by interacting with patients in a professional, friendly manner consistent with their needs.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assures efficient patient flow through the office
  • Assures patient Medical Record is complete prior to the visit
  • Prints daily schedules
  • Prints Medication Lists
  • Greets patients coming in for appointments in a professional manner and escorts them into the exam room
  • Adheres to hand hygiene and standard precaution guidelines
  • Assists with admission process:

    Checks 2 patient identifiers

    Documents chief complaint or symptom(s) in medical record, as stated by the patient

    Reviews current medications and prescriptions that need to be renewed, then gives to Nurse

    Obtains vital signs (blood pressure, height, weight, pulse, temperature)
  • Instructs patient how to prepare for the provider (assisting as necessary)
  • Anticipates / sets up special equipment and/or supplies needed for the visit
  • Alerts the provider when patient is ready and communicates pertinent clinical information
  • Assists and chaperones the provider with patient examination, and treatments as directed
  • Sets/maintains sterile field and assists for specialized Gyn diagnostic and therapeutic procedures: e.g. Rigid-scope for Essure, Polypectomy and MAB, LEEP, Colposcopy
  • Sets/maintains sterile field and assists with URO/GYN procedures: Cystoscopy, UDS, Coaptite and Urethra Stretching
  • Collects specimens during the visit; adheres to the checking of 2 identifiers
  • Completes requisitions for diagnostic tests for provider review and approval
  • Documents testing/results per practice protocols
  • Assists patient through check-out process when visit is complete, when needed, escorts patients to desired destinations.
  • Cleans and prepares room for next patient
  • Maintains neat, clean and safe exam rooms and treatment areas
  • Assures these same areas are professional-looking
  • Responds to needs to expedite visits and keep on schedule
  • Scans patient consents/correspondence immediately following patients discharge into Medical Record
  • Provides monthly scanning audit 1st of month, for review for the Clinical Manager
  • Prepares procedural medications under supervision of physician/NP
  • Works with the Help Desk to facilitate scanner issues.
  • Prints consent forms for Pods''
  • Maintains daily Urinary Pregnancy/Wet Prep/Urine Dipstick logs for Quality Assurance.
  • Assures exam and treatment rooms are properly stocked, equipped, and secured as applicable
  • Assures all equipment is in good working order
  • Checks for expiration dates on all supplies weekly.
  • Cleans equipment after patient use per office protocols
  • Promotes patient/customer satisfaction by interacting with patients in a professional, friendly manner consistent with their needs

  • Adheres to Human Resource policies with respect to attendance and dress code
  • Adheres to MGH customer service philosophy in all patient interactions
  • Communicates appropriately and effectively with patients
  • Functions as an integral part of the patient care team
  • Interacts in a professional, cooperative way with other practice staff
  • Accepts delegated responsibilities in a positive manner
  • Offers help to others in the practice when not busy
  • Before leaving the practice on breaks / lunch makes sure adequate coverage is available
  • Engages in constructive problem solving with others in the practice as problems arise
  • Attends and participates in practice staff meetings
  • Performs POC testing

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, Associate's Degree preferred
  • 1-2 years of experience preferred
  • Medical Assistant and Basic Life Support certification recommended
  • Nursing Assistant certification or other academic preparation may be considered in lieu of certification.
