REMOTE opportunity

Responsible for managing and coordinating day-to-day office operations and workflow of actuarial unit. Manage, motivate and develop actuarial staff. Exchange information with staff and offer assistance in addressing workflow needs. Manage all resources associated with the actuarial operations unit including performing advanced level actuarial analysis, manage department workload and priorities, maintain efficient processes, and communicating results. Aid department director in strategic planning.

RESPONSIBILITIES/TASKS:

  • Analyzes data and presents analysis in a format appropriate for pricing, loss reserving, product development, reinsurance and other financial analysis. Effectively communicates, makes recommendations, and presents data to appropriate personnel.
  • Prepares commentary for executive management regarding profitability trends and their causes.
  • Works with various business units to help create and drive strategic plans and metrics.
  • Monitors premium and loss ratio projections, communicates status to Operating Units and the Holding Company.
  • Acts as a liaison to Finance and assists in annual profit planning process and expense forecasting as necessary.
  • Participates in loss reserve analyses and monitors reserve levels throughout the quarters.
  • Presents loss reserve analysis to executives and identifies key assumptions underlying results.
  • Monitor profitability of various segments makes recommendations to take corrective action as necessary, and monitors action plans.
  • Maintains and helps design pricing, reserving, reinsurance and forecasting models.
  • Represents Actuarial on corporate projects as needed.
  • Provides support and peer review to the Capital Modeling team and the Capital Allocation process.
  • Works with the Enterprise Risk Management team on identifying on monitoring risks.
  • Assigned advanced special projects as needed.
  • Specific tasks that will need to be overseen may include, but are not limited to:
  • Direct work with one or more operating units to help with strategy and planning.
  • Quarterly reserving analysis.
  • Rate reviews and filings.
  • Reinsurance oversight including pricing, data submission, and relationship with brokers.
  • Forecast model updates.
  • Ad Hoc industry financial analysis.
  • Pricing tools and analysis (large account pricing workbook and segmentation tools).
  • Dividend and Retro Accruals.
  • Monthly booking process with Finance.
  • Monthly scorecard updates.
  • Provide guidance, training and leadership to employees and mentor other actuarial analysts.
  • Assure appropriate level of documentation in regards to actuarial department and procedures.
  • Ensure efficient and effective use of company resources, evaluate processes and procedures, and develop new procedures.
  • Assist in the creation of a department strategic plan that supports corporate initiatives.
  • Regularly communicate issues or progress to department director.
  • Adhere to deadlines, ensure work is completed on a timely basis.
  • Participate in development of annual departmental budget.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for communication used for the parent and board of directors. Ensure that all material produced is of utmost quality, is internally consistent, and is completed in timely manner.
  • Institute a peer review process for critical deliverables and provide peer review support for other processes as requested.
  • Exercise discretion when communicating outside of department.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information processed as appropriate.

DIRECTION EXERCISED:

Directly supervises exempt and non-exempt staff in accordance with company policies and applicable Federal and State Laws. Responsibilities include but are not limited to effectively interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and counseling employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; supporting and encouraging the engagement process.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree in actuarial science, mathematics, or a related area required. Attainment of Associate designation from the Casualty Actuarial Society required. Continuous learning, as defined by the Company's learning philosophy, is required. Certification or progress toward certification is highly preferred and encouraged.

Additional Education for Managing Actuary:

Attainment of Fellow designation from the Casualty Actuarial Society required.

EXPERIENCE:

Seven years relevant actuarial experience which provides the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities required. Two years management or supervisory experience, or combinations of related training and experience required.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES (SKA) REQUIRED:
  • Knowledge of mathematics and statistics with the ability to perform necessary mathematical computations.
  • Advanced knowledge of actuarial principles and practices, including reinsurance, reserving and ratemaking, financial reporting, underwriting and marketing guidelines and claims practices.
  • Ability to apply the principles of logical thinking to define problem; collect data, establish facts and draw conclusions.
  • Excellent communication with others both verbally and in writing and the ability to communicate actuarial concepts and conclusions to non-actuaries.
  • Expert user of Excel, Access, and preferably ResQ.
  • Ability to learn new software easily.
  • Ability to effectively exchange information clearly and concisely, present ideas, report facts and other information, and respond to questions as appropriate.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, establish work flows and meet necessary deadlines.
  • Thorough knowledge of departmental procedures and workflows.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities.
  • Ability to comprehend the consequences of various problem situations and address them.
  • Ability to make competent, independent decisions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality as appropriate.
  • Ability to perform other assignments at locations outside the office.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in an office/remote setting with no unusual hazards.
