Responsible for managing and coordinating maintenance of all equipment. Equipment includes all mobile and stationary equipment such Front End Loaders, Forklifts, skid steers, ELVs and other assets or equipment as assigned. Other duties include emergency repairs, installation / PMs on equipment and the sourcing, planning, and coordinating of special projects. This includes the scheduling and record keeping of equipment for preventative maintenance and coordinating with impacted production departments.

Purpose of Position:

This position operates with a wide degree of latitude in decision making and responsibility and is solely responsible for coordinating all maintenance and maintenance personnel as required to keep assigned equipment functioning. This position is critical to the productivity at the facility by ensuring equipment is able to operate safely with as little unplanned downtime as possible.

Essential Functions            

  • Works to complete repairs, maintenance and emergency repairs.
  • Collects all work requests for tracking, scheduling, and cost assessment.
  • Tracks all equipment hours for standard routine preventative maintenance and proactive scheduling of routine repairs.
  • Coordinates all repairs, both minor and major, with site and operations managers to ensure efficient and effect work is performed in a timely manner.
  • Works closely with the Operations Manager on all special projects.
  • Works closely with the Operations Manager on all emergency repairs and installations.
  • Responsible for safety by notifying site managers when equipment is unsafe due to operator error, poor maintenance, or repair needs. May be required to train staff on the safe maintenance and use of assigned equipment and tools.
  • Sits on the Safety Committee.
  • Purchases material for special projects and standard items for maintenance and repair.
  • Supervises contract maintenance from vendors.
  • Works closely with suppliers and vendors.
  • Ability to travel 25 % of time
VI Supervisory Responsibility:

This position is directly responsible for managing all repair and maintenance in PNP Alberta

Interpersonal Contacts:

Internal cont1acts: Local facility (works closely with all departments and exchanges information).

External contacts: Contractors, Engineering Companies, Equipment Manufactures, Vendors and Suppliers.

Job Conditions:

This position is regularly exposed to all weather conditions. Physical hazards are present due to the equipment and machinery used throughout the scrap yard and the presence of scrap itself. This is a moderate to high-pressure position.

Specific Job Skills:

Knowledge of equipment repair and maintenance operations (both mobile and stationary equipment), knowledge of welding, blue print and schematic reading, good judgment, writing and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills and organizational skills. Must have the ability to apply logical principles to solve practical problems and to deal with a large number of variables and determine a specific course of action.

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:

Ability to: sit, stand, and or walk for several hours per day; negotiate around and over piles of metal scrap; bend, twist, kneel, crouch, hear; lift, carry, push and pull over 50 pounds occasionally. Visual acuity for close detailed (reports, manuals, documents, blueprints, engineering schematics, computer work)

Education and/or Experience:    

High school graduate required; college necessary with a strong back ground in mechanical engineering, welding, heavy equipment and mathematics or equivalent work experience; technical or vocational training or experience in a manufacturing repair and maintenance environment; several year experience with repair and maintenance in a scrap metal operations or equivalent experience. Must possess a interprovincial red seal as heavy duty Mechanic.
