Position Summary:

The Department of Theatre & Performance at Spelman College invites applications for a lecturer position in Technical Theater beginning August 2022. The position also supports the Department of Dance Performance & Choreography. The ideal candidate will have experience with traditional and contemporary theater, performance, and dance practices including site specific, screendance, and live-streaming approaches. Technical theater and design experience working with students in an academic environment is required. Two or more years teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level is also required. An MFA or equivalent experience is required. The appointment requires a 2/2 teaching load teaching Production Laboratory and Introduction to Technical Theatre & Design. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating and maintaining the technical assets of the theater including lighting, sound, digital technologies, communications equipment and the use and maintenance of stage facilities; advising on lighting, sound and any additional set designs or technical specifications, costs and usage of the technical equipment required for each production; developing and overseeing the Production Lab in order that students acquire the capabilities to assist with set and stage construction and all audio and lighting aspects associated with shows. Additional responsibilities include: supervising the construction of sets and building of scenery, transporting set pieces from shops in the local area to the theater stage, purchasing construction materials, mounting scenery on stage, overseeing the work of the scenic crews during rehearsals and performances. The Department of Theatre & Performance offers the creative and inquisitive candidate an opportunity to explore performance, writing and design through experimentation and exploration. This interdisciplinary approach to performance offers a gateway to multifaceted opportunities in performance, theater studies and the creative industries. Students are encouraged to experiment with performance modalities featuring text, film, songs and site-specific areas to develop and create original stories. Along with performing the classic and contemporary theater texts, students will experience a well-rounded interdisciplinary performance training. African American cultural forms along with a rich sprinkling of diverse creative methodologies from around the world expose students to an up-to-date contemporary performance practice. On offer is the opportunity to develop a critical and practical analysis of performance, art, social activism and politics to comprehend how these elements sync together to shape and form bold and exciting artists/citizen
The Department of Theatre & Performance is part of ARTS@Spelman, which also includes the departments of Art & Visual Culture, Dance Performance & Choreography, Music, the Digital Moving Image Salon, the Museum of Fine Art, and the Spelman College Innovation Lab. The College will soon break ground for the Center for Innovation and the Arts, a building that will support interdisciplinary environment that supports and advances experimentation, collaboration, active play, research, and the imaginative use of digital technologies.
