About the Knoebel Institute for Healthy Aging

The Knoebel Institute for Healthy Aging (KIHA) brings together key strengths from around campus and the region to address growing needs here in Denver and throughout the nation. Designed to address complex problems in depth, the Institute builds on DU's dedication to the public good by supporting research and scholarship on aging in a variety of disciplines. Lab scientists, social workers, psychologists, lawyers, education specialists, business faculty members, and others are routinely involved. The work of the Institute is truly collaborative work, leveraging the assets of the DU community in the discovery and design of knowledge and engagement across our campus and around the world.

Position Summary

The Horowitz Biochemistry Lab seeks a Lab Coordinator to help with organization, inventory, ordering supplies, machine maintenance, cleaning, and assisting in lab operations. This opportunity combines administrative responsibilities with scientific work experience. The Lab Coordinator will work to support current research through organization, ordering supplies, coordinating maintenance visits, and occasionally creating buffers. The position is part time (approximately 20 hours per week), with benefits. This position is grant-funded through June 2024 with the possibility of extension.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the Horowitz lab
  • Order and inventory for new supplies
  • Communicate with the Horowitz lab about needs
  • Assist in making standard laboratory materials
  • Assist with regulatory paperwork and laboratory safety protocols
  • Coordination of equipment maintenance
  • Maintain/update lab website
  • Process lab expenses

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to learn new processes and procedures
  • Ability to work as a team member or independently
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with grad students and professors
  • Initiative, follow-through and reliability.
  • Basic biochemistry knowledge for creating buffers and solutions.

    Required Qualifications
  • A bachelors degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or related area of study.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • 3-6 months experience in a laboratory environment

    Working Environment

    1. Shared laboratory space
    2. Unexpected interruptions occur often, and stress level is moderate to high.
    3. Noise level is quiet to moderate.

    Physical Activities

    1. Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period of time occasionally.
    2. Ability to move about the lab/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs. with assistance

    Work Schedule

    University operating hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Please discuss work schedule with hiring manager.

    Salary Grade Number:

    The salary grade for the position is 5.

    Hourly Range:

    The hourly range for the position is $19.00 - $21.00.

The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
